Munich - FC Bayern München sporting director Matthias Sammer has signed a three-year contract extension that will see him tied to the Bundesliga record titleholders until 2018, the club announced on Wednesday.

Trophy-laden relationship

"This is a big vote of confidence in [Sammer]," explained club president Karl Hopfner. "Continuity in our management team is something that has always set FC Bayern apart and will continue to do so in the future. We're delighted that Matthias has committed to the role of sporting director for a further three years."

Sammer became a member of the

's hierarchy back in the summer of 2012 in what proved to be former head coach Jupp Heynckes' final year in charge, as FC Bayern clinched an historic treble. Renowned for his no-nonsense approach to the club's on and off-field dealings, Sammer has been credited with giving the reigning Bundesliga champions the edge that has seen them establish themselves as an unrivalled title-winning machine both on the domestic and international circuits. "I feel very much at home here and it's a huge honour to be able to continue to serve this club. I want to thank the supervisory board for their trust in me, but also for the fantastic working relationship I have with my colleagues on the club's board of directors," said Sammer, who appears to have struck up a fantastic understanding with head coach Pep Guardiola during the Catalan's 16-month reign. "I promise that I will continue to go about fulfilling my duties with the same passion and intensity as I have done so far. We've all got big targets for FC Bayern. I want to play my part in us hitting those targets."
