Werder's sporting director Thomas Eichin confirmed the 23-year-old's departure on Wednesday afternoon, underlining his desire for regular football as the reason behind the deal.
“We have come to an agreement with Mateo that the most important thing for him is to get some games under his belt. We hope that he will continue to further develop his game under Ferencvárosi's coach Thomas Doll,” explained Eichin.
The Croatian youth international joined the Grün-Weißen from NK Zagreb in January 2013. Since then the centre-back has only featured four times for the first team and, yet to make an appearance in the current campaign, has most recently been plying his trade in Bremen’s reserve team in the German fourth tier.
