Munich - FC Bayern Munich centre-back has been rewarded for his commanding displays at the heart of the Bundesliga leaders' defence with a first ever call-up to the Brazil national team.
The uncapped 29-year-old joins former FIFA Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldinho in coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's first squad in his second spell in charge of the Selecao.
"It's all down to him," explained Brazil's head coach. "A day of training in London isn't really long enough, but if he fits in well with the team and meets our expectations, then of course he's a future candidate."
Brazil are due to play play England in a friendly in London on 6 February as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the English Football Association.
