Munich - 1899 Hoffenheim's Boris Vukcevic is in an induced coma after suffering life-threatening injuries in a road crash on Friday afternoon.

"We will play and fight for Boris"

The 22-year-old midfielder sustained serious head injuries when his car hit a truck on a main road not far from the team's training ground in Sinsheim. He was airlifted to a Heidelberg Hospital, where he immediately underwent surgery before being placed in an artificial coma, the club announced.

The lorry driver involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.

"We're distressed by this news. The team, the coach, everyone at the club is shocked. Our thoughts are with Boris and his family," Hoffenheim's sporting director Andreas Müller said.

In a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Müller commented that Vukcevic's "cardiovascular system is stable, but we can't give any further details." After discussions with family members as well as the squad, Saturday's match at home to FC Augsburg will go ahead as planned. "We will play and fight for Boris," Müller added.
