How was his 2025/26 season?
Grimaldo chipped in with 14 goals and 12 assists for all competitions in 2025/26 - from left-back! Among the experienced figureheads in a youthful Bayer squad, the Spain international also wore the captain's armband on a number of occasions as Leverkusen finished sixth to qualify for next season's UEFA Europa League.

What he brings to the national team
Despite only featuring 12 times for La Roja, Grimaldo has been a regular in Luis de la Fuente’s squads since debuting in November 2023. One of Europe’s best free-kick takers, he could be the 2010 world champions' trump card from the bench - even more so considering his ability to play in a range of positions.

What his coaches say
“He’s very important for the team’s flexibility. We give him a lot of freedom, and he uses it to find the right spaces and give the team structure. Whether on the wing, in midfield, or as a 10, he is a top player and also has a very professional attitude, and he takes responsibility as a leader.” - Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand.
“He's very versatile and gives us lots of options." - De la Fuente
