Wolfsburg and Gladbach played out a hard-fought goalless draw on Matchday 31, a result that leaves both clubs still looking nervously over their shoulders in the relegation battle.
The Wolves entered the match with renewed hope after ending their 12-game winless run with victory at Union Berlin last weekend. For the Foals, a win would have opened a 10-point gap to Wolfsburg and guaranteed at least a relegation playoff spot. Instead, the stalemate means the fight for survival continues for both sides, with Dieter Hecking's men still within touching distance of 16th-placed St. Pauli.
First-half dominance
The opening period belonged firmly to Eugen Polanski's Gladbach side, who took control from the first whistle when Kevin Stöger fired wide after just a minute. The Foals dominated possession and created several promising opportunities, with Franck Honorat forcing a save from Kamil Grabara and Joe Scally going close in the 19th minute.
Haris Tabaković squandered perhaps their best chance of the half, blazing over from a promising position after 36 minutes. Wolfsburg threatened mainly on the counter-attack, with Mohamed Amoura striking the outside of the post in the 45th minute before missing another good opportunity just before the break.
Wolfsburg respond
The hosts emerged for the second half with renewed purpose and immediately created a golden opportunity when Patrick Wimmer's cross found both Aaron Zehnter and Amoura in space, but the pair got in each other's way and the chance was wasted. Hecking's men gradually took control as the half progressed, with Joakim Mæhle shooting wide and substitute Saël Kumbedi missing a good chance in the 79th minute.
Gladbach were not without threat themselves, as Giovanni Reyna's looping header struck the inside of the post with five minutes remaining. The game ended in acrimony when Jens Castrop received a straight red card in stoppage time for a reckless challenge, with several players from both sides picking up bookings in the heated final moments.
Man of the Match: Moritz Nicolas
Moritz Nicolas produced a commanding performance to earn his clean sheet and the Man of the Match award. The Gladbach goalkeeper made crucial interventions throughout, denying Amoura with a strong save in the first half and maintaining his concentration to deal with Wolfsburg's increased pressure after the break.
His positioning was exemplary, particularly when called upon to handle crosses into the box, and his distribution helped Gladbach build attacks from the back. Nicolas' composure under pressure was vital in securing a valuable point for his team in their battle to avoid relegation.
