Okon-Engstler's footballing journey began at semi-professional Sydney-based outfit Marconi Stallions – where his father had likewise started his own career – before he was enrolled at A-League side Western Sydney Stallions’ youth set-up in 2018.
Just one year later, the youngster moved back to his country of birth, Belgium, signing for Club Brugge’s prestigious academy. A three-year stint would follow before Okon-Engstler impressed scouts of Portuguese giants Benfica during a youth tournament, which led the Lisbon club to come calling in July 2022.
Despite signing a three-year deal, Okon-Engstler never made a senior appearance for Benfica, instead making only 12 for the reserve team before once again returning to Australia to sign for Sydney FC in July 2025.
It proved to be a fruitful move for the young midfielder, who went on to make 30 appearances in all competitions to help the Sky Blues reach the A-League Grand Final, where they were ultimately defeated 1-0 by first-time champions Auckland FC.
His impressive displays resulted in a first senior international cap, coming in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Venezuela in November 2025. Continuing his upwards trajectory, Okon-Engstler was included in the Socceroos' 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, where he featured in all four of Australia’s games as they reached the round of 32.

Much like Stuttgart’s midfield metronome, Okon-Engstler is most comfortable operating just in front of his defensive line. Composed with the ball at his feet, the 21-year-old left-footer boasts a varied passing range and thrives on setting attacks up from deep. Standing at 6’1’’ – an inch taller than Stiller – the Australian has a physical edge to his game too, consistently proving tenacious in both aerial and ground duels.

Okon-Engstler is the son of former Australia international Paul Okon, who - over the course of a near 18-year professional career - laced his boots in Australia, Belgium, Italy, England and Cyprus. Okon Sr. was capped 28 times internationally by the Socceroos and now serves as national team's assistant manager.
