Born in Accra, Mensah began his senior career at the West Africa Football Academy before signing a five-year contract with Red Bull Salzburg in July 2016. He was immediately loaned to Salzburg’s feeder club - second-tier side Liefering - for whom he made 47 appearances between 2016 and 2018.
During his first season at Liefering, Mensah was eligible to play for Salzburg’s Under-19 team in the UEFA Youth League. It proved to be a memorable campaign for the young side - and their young coach Rose - as they overcame the likes of Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona en route to winning the tournament.
Mensah featured in seven of Salzburg’s nine games, and even made the scoresheet in a 5-0 win over PSG in the last 16. He continued to feature regularly for Liefering but, with first-team opportunities at Salzburg proving hard to come by, the defender was loaned to Sturm Graz for the second half of the 2018/19 season.
He made only 15 appearances for the club but left a big impression, playing the full 90 minutes on 13 occasions and helping his side qualify for the UEFA Europa League. He returned to Salzburg that summer but was soon on the move again, agreeing a season-long loan with Belgian side Zulte Waregem.
Further loan spells - at Portuguese club Vitória de Guimarães in 2020/21 and French side Bordeaux in 2021/22 - followed, but it was at Auxerre that Mensah truly established himself as a key senior player after leaving Salzburg for good in summer 2022.
He made 114 appearances for Auxerre in all competitions, helping the club back into Ligue 1 at the first time of asking following relegation in his debut season. He started 26 of Auxerre’s 34 league games in 2025/26, including the the last eight matches as Christophe Pélissier’s side kept their heads above water in the top flight.
Mensah has also won 44 caps for Ghana since making his senior international debut in November 2019. He played every minute of the Black Stars’ FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign - his second appearance at the finals after 2022 - and even captained the side in a friendly against South Korea in November 2025.

He may not have hit the same heights as Davies in his career, but Mensah does possess several of the qualities that make Bayern’s star left-back such an unstoppable force.
Mensah too is known for his pace, overlapping runs and high pressing - attributes which could make him an instant hit at the RheinEnergieStadion.

The full-back does not lack confidence, either. Speaking before Ghana’s World Cup 2026 group game against England, Mensah said: “I see myself as a big player for big games and big players. It’s time for me to also shine!”
He was true to his word, delivering an impressive performance as the Black Stars held Harry Kane and Co. to a goalless draw.
