Vincenzo Grifo moves level with Nils Petersen as Freiburg’s all-time top scorer
Having overtaken Nils Petersen as Freiburg’s all-time Bundesliga top scorer in December, Vincenzo Grifo has now moved level with the former striker on 105 goals for the Breisgau club in all competitions.
Grifo opened the scoring in the 34th minute of Freiburg’s enthralling 3-3 draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. His scuffed, close-range finish may not have been one of his most spectacular efforts, but it will certainly go down as one of the Italian’s most memorable strikes for the Black Forest outfit.
Petersen managed 105 goals in 277 appearances for Freiburg, but unlike Grifo, the club legend was an out-and-out striker. For a winger, scoring 105 times in 344 outings is every bit as impressive – if not more so.

After the game, Grifo shared his delight at moving level with Petersen in the club’s all-time scoring chart.
"I’ve said it before, I’m proud of it because I’m a midfielder," he said. "I had a great conversation with [former Freiburg player and Germany coach] Joachim Löw this week over breakfast. He said that to have scored so many goals as a midfielder, I really rate that."
The 32-year-old will be determined to claim the outright record when Freiburg face Belgian side Genk in the UEFA Europa League last 16 on Thursday.
