Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich target Pep Guardiola's Bundesliga wonder start

The race is on for Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany to beat the best-ever start to a Bundesliga campaign. With Pep Guardiola's 2015/16 feat now firmly in their sights, the current Bavarian crop are beginning to sense a new division-defining high in their bones.

The Bayern of 2025/26 have begun the campaign in spellbinding form. Winning their first nine Bundesliga games with a goal difference of +29 had never been achieved before - until now.

Yet the all-time winning run to begin a German top-flight season still stands at 10 victories and it is Guardiola - in charge at Bayern between 2013 and 2016 - who still proudly holds onto that spectacular opening sequence, created back in 2015/16.

In a compelling twist, Bayern's goal difference after those 10 matchdays under Pep also stood at +29, but after Kompany's side were held to a 2-2 draw against Union on Matchday 10, it means that his side can no longer surpass Guardiola's winning start to a season.

Comparing the coaches' overall records after Matchday 10 this term, Kompany's first 44 Bundesliga matches in charge at Bayern and the 102 games Pep clocked up during his time in the division saw both the two tacticians very close in terms of points-per-game average: Kompany (2.50) and Guardiola (2.52).

However, when checking the current Manchester City tactician's stats after the same amount of top-tier matches in Germany that Kompany now has under his belt, Guardiola edges his Belgian counterpart.

After his first 44 Bundesliga games, Kompany's Bayern have collected 110 points (34 wins, eight draws, two defeats). Guardiola, meanwhile, had amassed 111 points (35 wins, six draws, two losses) after his first 43 Bundesliga matches at the Bayern helm, boasting an average of 2.58 points per game to Kompany's 2.50.

It all makes the best-start-to-a-season race a fascinating challenge for today's Bayern and, although perhaps not a priority given the main goal of defending their top-flight title, would be one that Kompany and his team would be proud to achieve.   

Speaking after Bayern's recent Bundesliga triumph at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Kompany said, "We can’t stop no, we have to keep going; we have good momentum. We can’t get too arrogant. We must stay calm, work hard, and deliver a result in the next game."
