Arriving at Bayern with the daunting task of overhauling a Bayer Leverkusen side that had gone unbeaten the previous season, success was far from guaranteed for Kompany. And yet, 50 games into his spell as the Bavarians' head coach, few could characterise his time at the club as anything other than a success.

Perhaps most pleasing of all for the Belgian is the fact that his side appears to be going from strength to strength.

After sealing the Bundesliga title last season, Bayern are top of the league once more, having dropped just four points in 15 games. Indeed, after the side's remarkable 8-1 defeat of Wolfsburg on 11 January (Kompany's biggest league win yet), they surpassed Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen record for the most points accrued after 16 matchdays.

The journey to this point has been far from comfortable at times. Having only been a head coach since 2020, his lack of experience quickly became a source of focus for critics.

Not that it held Kompany - or Bayern - back, as his side scored a remarkable 99 goals in his debut season at the helm. More than just winning, Bayern were doing so in a convincing, clinical fashion.

"The players are enjoying their football, and that shows on the pitch...he’s doing an incredibly good job,” said Bayern president Herbert Hainer last October. “We’re playing very attractive football, scoring lots of goals. The team is having fun, you see that on the pitch – but after the games as well."

Hainer continued to wax lyrical about Kompany in that interview, adding: "There’s an incredible sense of togetherness. That comes from the coach, who does that brilliantly – both from a sporting and personal point of view.”

While his side would ultimately get knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the semi-final stage, the signs were already ominous. This season, Kompany has helped the side reach new levels domestically as well as on the continent.

Throughout the whole of 2025, Bayern have only lost once in the Bundesliga, and have averaged at least two goals in each of their last 24 Bundesliga games - a current record in the competition.

In their last 24 matches at the Allianz Arena, too, there have always been at least two goals for the home side, surpassing Werder Bremen’s record from 1984 to 1985.

With UEFA Champions League knockout stage qualification almost wrapped up, and a DFB Pokal quarter-final to look forward to, Bayern could hardly be in a better position at the start of 2026. Kompany, whose Bavarian journey started 18 months ago, has played a defining role in leading Bayern to the enviable position they’re in.

Not even long-term injuries to star players like Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies have knocked the club off course - with both of those key performers set to return to the starting line-up in the coming weeks.

More impressive still, the former Premier League-winning captain hasn’t been afraid to put trust in youth. The rise of Lennart Karl this season is surely the best example of his philosophy paying dividends.  While no one can deny the youngster’s incredible ability, it is Kompany who has provided him  - and many of his teammates - with the platform to flourish.

"I like his style as a coach," Dayot Upamecano said of Kompany. "He encourages me to stay close to the attacker, to seek out one vs. one situations, and to press aggressively. I haven't played a pressing game since I was 15 years old in Strasbourg. I like playing like that. It doesn’t scare me. And you need to be brave to defend one vs. one. I like the way that he plays his football, and that’s why I’m so happy that he’s here as our coach."

It remains to be seen how this season will pan out for Bayern, but so far, Kompany’s men have looked almost unbeatable domestically. Averaging a staggering 2.52 points per game over 50 matches, which is equalled only by Pep Guardiola during the Spaniard's time in Munich, his start is almost without parallel in the Bundesliga.

How appropriate, then, that his 50th Bundesliga match in charge happened to see Bayern's biggest margin of victory in the league since his arrival. Bayern fans will be hoping that's a sign of even greater things to come in 2026.
