Victor Boniface faces several months on the sidelines after the Werder Bremen striker had surgery on his knee on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has played 11 times for Bremen this season after joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen but failed to register a goal.

He missed the final two fixtures of 2025 with the issue preventing him from training, while it also ruled him out of Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

After visiting a specialist in Austria, Werder have now confirmed that the striker will have a surgery and therefore be out of action for several months.

The club confirmed that his loan deal until the end of 2025/26 will not be cut short, while Leverkusen’s club doctors were also involved in the decision.

Boniface scored 22 goals over 42 Bundesliga appearances for the Werkself, including 14 in their 2023/24 title-winning season.

Prior to joining from Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023, the 13-time Nigeria international had also suffered two cruciate ligament tears with previous club Bodø/Glimt.

Bremen’s return to action for 2026 was delayed this weekend after heavy snow led to the postponement of their Matchday 16 fixture with Hoffenheim. They will now resume their campaign away at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
