Elvis Rexhbecaj to return to Wolfsburg
Elvis Rexhbecaj will return to boyhood club Wolfsburg from Bundesliga rivals Augsburg at the end of the season on a free transfer.
The 28-year-old midfielder has signed a contract valid until 30 June 2030 at the Volkswagen Arena.
"For me, returning to Wolfsburg will be something very special," Rexhbecaj said. "It’s where I grew up and where I began my Bundesliga career with VfL, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
"So when the opportunity came up to come back, it didn’t take long for me to decide. That said, until the final matchday, I’ll be giving everything for Augsburg.”
Rexhbecaj came through the Wolfsburg academy, having joined at the age of 12 in 2010. After progressing through the various age categories, he made his Bundesliga debut for the club in a 1-0 away win at Hannover on 28 Janaury 2018.
That was the first of 28 top-flight appearances for the club, prior to loan spells at Cologne and Bochum in order to gain more regular playing time. Rexhbecaj moved to Augsburg in 2022, and it was there that he established himself in the Bundesliga. He also has 16 senior international caps for Kosovo.
"With Elvis, we’re bringing back a player who has a deep connection to VfL Wolfsburg and the city," said sporting director Pirmin Schwegler. "The fact he’s committed to the club during a challenging period on the pitch makes it all the more meaningful for us.
"Alongside his footballing ability, he stands out for his strong character, which you can feel both on and off the pitch. He gives his all in every game and takes responsibility."
