The VBL International Series 2023 saw gamers from the United States, Brazil, Vietnam, Japan and Thailand compete for the chance to win a trip to Germany, where they jostled for the VBL International Series title, as well as the chance to watch FC Bayern München against RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

The Virtual Bundesliga’s International Series pitted players from around the world against each other on official Bundesliga partner EA Sports’ FIFA 23 and FIFA Online 4.

Qualifier tournaments – either online or offline – were held in Thailand, Brazil, the USA, Japan and Vietnam from 24 April. To compete, a player had to be based in one of those countries, play with a current Bundesliga or Bundesliga 2 team and be at least 18 years of age, capable of travelling to Germany (valid passport, complying with all visa, travel and COVID-19 vaccination restrictions). The top four players in each country qualifier received a cash/item prize, with the ultimate winner advancing to the VBL International Series Final in Germany. That tookplace over 18-21 May 2023, coinciding with Matchday 33 in the Bundesliga.

The five country winners were joined in Munich by a wildcard from India to compete for a share of the $10,000 prize pool.

Finalists experienced a money-can’t-buy, all-expenses paid trip to Germany, where they also got to visit the Allianz Arena to sit in some of the best seats in the house and experience the world-famous German footballing atmosphere, watching defending champions Bayern take on Leipzig live. Furthermore, the six competitors were able to meet Bundesliga Legends. It’s Esports meets real-life Bundesliga!

On the day of the finals, the winners took part in a training camp with professional Virtual Bundesliga players. Each of their journeys was also documented from start to finish by leading Esports influencers from their home nation.
