Union Berlin captain Christopher Trimmel extends contract
Club captain Christopher Trimmel has extended his contract with Union Berlin, the Köpenickers have confirmed.
On Tuesday, Die Eisernen celebrated the 60th anniversary of the club's foundation in 1966. Amongst the festivities, Austria international Trimmel extended his contract with the club, meaning he will remain in Berlin for next season.
Speaking upon the announcement, the 38-year-old said, "Looking back on my time at Union, I am above all grateful. I have experienced so much here, grown as a player and as a person, and been part of a development of this club that probably no one could have expected. Union is much more than just a club for me; it has become a place where I feel at home and where I want to continue giving my all."
Horst Heldt, Union's managing director, added, "'Trimmi', like almost no other player, embodies the development of Union in recent years. He has taken on sporting responsibility, led by example as captain, and has always identified with the club. This renewed contract extension is an expression of trust and appreciation, as well as an important sign of continuity within our team."
Next season will therefore be Trimmel's 13th at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. He joined in 2014 from Rapid Vienna when Union were still in Bundesliga 2, before taking over as skipper ahead of the 2018/19 term.

That season, they were promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history, where they have stayed ever since.
Despite their lack of top-flight experience, Union have qualified for Europe three times, participating in the UEFA Champions League in 2023/24.
With 378 appearances, Trimmel has played more time for Union than any other player in their history, featuring on 18 occasions in all competitions this campaign.
