The match at Europa-Park Stadion pitted two sides with contrasting home and away fortunes. Julian Schuster's Freiburg entered the contest on an impressive 16-match unbeaten run at home, their longest such streak in over two decades.

Meanwhile, Steffen Baumgart's Union Berlin had won just one of their last 10 Bundesliga matches since the winter break, slipping to within four points of the relegation play-off position.

Tightly contested first half

The opening exchanges set the tone for a physical encounter with few clear-cut chances. Derrick Köhn registered the first attempt on target after just two minutes, but his long-range effort was comfortably gathered by Noah Atubolu.

The hosts gradually grew into the match, with Maximilian Eggestein firing over from inside the area on 12 minutes. Cyriaque Irié was particularly lively for Freiburg, cutting in from the right on multiple occasions but failing to trouble Matheo Raab with his efforts.

Despite enjoying nearly 70% possession, the Breisgauers struggled to break down a resolute Union defence, while the visitors looked occasionally threatening on the counter. Matthias Ginter came closest for the hosts with a header from a Derry Scherhant corner, but Raab was again equal to it as the half ended goalless.

Late drama decides tight contest

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Freiburg dominating possession but creating few clear opportunities. Both coaches turned to their benches in search of inspiration, with Yuito Suzuki replacing Lucas Höler for the hosts on the hour mark, while Baumgart introduced Alex Král and Jeong shortly after. Král nearly made an immediate impact, forcing a save from Atubolu in the 69th minute.

As the match entered its closing stages, a goalless draw seemed increasingly likely until the 92nd minute when Jeong collected the ball on the right, cut inside and curled a superb left-footed effort past Atubolu into the bottom corner.

Freiburg pushed desperately for an equaliser during the extended 16-minute stoppage time, with Niklas Beste's curling effort drawing a magnificent save from Raab in the 11th additional minute, but Union held firm to secure three vital points.

Man of the Match: Maximilian Eggestein

Despite ending on the losing side, Maximilian Eggestein was voted Man of the Match for his impressive all-round performance in midfield. The 27-year-old was at the heart of Freiburg's play throughout, registering two shots on goal and completing passes with remarkable consistency.

His ability to win possession and drive his team forward was evident throughout, particularly in the second half when the hosts were chasing the game. Eggestein covered 11.4km during the match, demonstrating his incredible work rate and commitment even as his side struggled to break down Union's resilient defence.
