Wolfsburg have bolstered their defensive options next season with the acquisition of Belgium centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw from Cologne.

Wolfsburg only conceded 37 goals last season - a league second-best behind RB Leipzig's 32 - as they secured a return to the UEFA Champions League after a six-year hiatus, but they are optimistic their latest acquisition can help them progress.

"Sebastiaan has made a name for himself with strong and consistent performances in the Bundesliga," said Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schäfer.

"We have a high opinion of his footballing qualities and also of the mentality and attitude he embodies on the pitch. He's our absolute dream player for the defence and therefore we are very happy that we were able to convince him to join."

A 6'3" defender with significant pace, Bornauw figures to form an intimidating central-defensive partnership with USMNT stalwart John Brooks.

The 22-year-old joined Cologne from Anderlecht in the summer of 2019 and has racked up 57 appearances since. Bornauw won his first Belgium caps with the Billy Goats, but was not involved at UEFA Euro 2020.

“I see a great opportunity here to take the next step in my career and to develop personally. Wolfsburg is a top destination in German football and I'm really looking forward to the challenges that await us in the Bundesliga, and also in Europe."

Bornauw's deal with Wolfsburg is valid until 2026.
