Roland Virkus resigns as Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director
Roland Virkus has resigned from his position as Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director, the club have confirmed.
A youth coach at Gladbach since 1990, Virkus was promoted to the role of sporting director in February 2022, succeeding Max Eberl (now board director for sport at Bayern Munich).
The Foals finished 10th, 14th and 10th during his tenure, but are bottom of the Bundesliga five games into the 2025/26 campaign and haven't won in the league since late March of last season.
It's a run of form that recently cost Gerardo Seoane his job as head coach, with former player Eugen Polanski overseeing the Rhineland club's last two fixtures.

"I've always said that the club comes first, and that's why I decided to take this step," explained Virkus of his decision.
Club president Rainer Bonhof added: "We are united across the board in the wish to reposition ourselves in a sporting sense going forward.
"This step certainly wasn't easy for Roland, as he lives and breathes Borussia and took on the position of sporting director in February 2022 in very difficult circumstances.
"We thank him for his commitment. He has worked for our club in various positions for more than 30 years, and he will always be a Borussia fan."
Gladbach host Freiburg at the weekend, in search of their first Bundesliga win in 13 matches.
