Fresh from their respective European quarter-final successes, both Mainz and Freiburg switched up their personnel as they returned to Bundesliga action.

Mainz coach Urs Fischer made two changes to his side, with Sota Kawasaki and Nikolas Veratschnig making rare starts, while Freiburg's Julian Schuster rotated heavily with six new faces in his starting XI.

The opening period provided few clear opportunities as both teams struggled to find their rhythm. Freiburg dominated possession in the early stages with Cyriaque Irié looking dangerous down the right flank.

Mainz gradually worked their way into the contest, with Danny da Costa firing over from the edge of the box midway through the half. The hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 26th minute when Stefan Posch struck the post with a powerful long-range effort that brushed Noah Atubolu's fingertips.

Veratschnig also sent a volley over the bar for Mainz, but the half would end goalless.

The visitors wasted no time in finding the breakthrough after the restart, taking the lead in the 47th minute. A long throw-in from Johan Manzambi was flicked on by half-time substitute Philipp Lienhart to Matthias Ginter, who cleverly backheeled the ball to Lucas Höler.

The forward made no mistake, powering a header beyond Daniel Batz into the right corner of the net. Mainz responded well to falling behind, with Sheraldo Becker testing Atubolu with a long-range effort. The introduction of Nadiem Amiri – making his first appearance in seven weeks – gave the hosts renewed impetus, and Dominik Kohr missed a golden opportunity to equalise from close range after good work from Amiri.

Ultimately, Freiburg saw out the win, which will give them confidence going into the second leg of their UEFA Europa League clash with Celta Vigo on Thursday.

Man of the Match: Lucas Höler

Höler proved to be the difference-maker in a tightly contested match, displaying both clinical finishing and tremendous work rate. His perfectly-timed header in the 47th minute demonstrated his aerial prowess and predatory instinct in the penalty area. Beyond the crucial goal, Höler covered more ground than any other player on the pitch (11.8 km), showing his importance to Freiburg's pressing game and overall team structure.

The forward's ability to link play and create space for his teammates was evident throughout, while his defensive contribution helped the visitors maintain their clean sheet under pressure in the closing stages. Höler's match-winning performance earned him a deserved Man of the Match award with 44 percent of the votes.
