Grischa Prömel rescues point for Hoffenheim against Dieter Hecking's Wolfsburg
After three straight defeats, Dieter Hecking’s Wolfsburg homecoming returned a valuable point against European hopefuls Hoffenheim as the Wolves sit three points adrift of the promotion/relegation play-off.
Hoffenheim 1-1 Wolfsburg
Goals: 0-1 Koulierakis 65’ (assist: Eriksen), 1-1 Prömel 83’ (Toure)
Dieter Hecking returned to the Wolfsburg dugout after nearly eight years away, tasked with saving the Wolves from what would be their first-ever Bundesliga relegation. The 61-year-old, who previously led the club to a runners-up finish and DFB-Pokal glory between 2012 and 2016, faced an immediate test against a high-flying Hoffenheim side.
The hosts were chasing history under Christian Ilzer, aiming to equal their club record of 16 Bundesliga wins in a single season. Wolfsburg came into the match without a victory in eight league games and with just two points from the entire Rückrunde, while sitting on their worst points tally (20) after 25 matches in their Bundesliga history.
Hoffenheim dominate but wasteful
Hoffenheim started brightly with Andrej Kramarić firing wide after just two minutes. The hosts continued to control possession but struggled to convert their dominance into clear-cut chances. Ozan Kabak saw his header saved by Kamil Grabara after five minutes, before another headed effort was blocked following a corner.
The visitors' first meaningful attempt came through Christian Eriksen who shot over the bar. Hoffenheim's best chance came midway through the half when Wouter Burger forced Grabara into a tremendous save from close range. The home side continued to press but couldn't find a breakthrough before half-time.
Wolves strike against the run of play
The pattern continued after the break with Hoffenheim controlling proceedings but struggling to create clear opportunities. Fisnik Asllani had a shot saved by the impressive Grabara, while Kramarić fired wide from distance.
Both managers looked to their benches around the hour mark, with Ilzer bringing on Grischa Prömel and Tim Lemperle, while Hecking introduced Jonas Wind and Adam Daghim.
Against the run of play, Wolfsburg struck the opener in the 65th minute when Konstantinos Koulierakis rose highest to head home Eriksen's corner. The goal stunned the home crowd, who had watched their team dominate possession but fail to make it count.
Prömel to the rescue
Hoffenheim responded well to going behind, with Kabak firing wide from inside the box. Leon Avdullahu nearly gifted Wolfsburg a second when his backpass eluded Oliver Baumann but fortunately struck the post. Kramarić then forced Grabara into another save from a tight angle as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.
Ilzer introduced Ihlas Bebou as Hoffenheim committed men forward, and the pressure finally told in the 83rd minute. Toure, a constant threat down the left, delivered a pinpoint cross that substitute Prömel met perfectly, guiding his header beyond Grabara to level the scores.
Despite seven minutes of added time and Hoffenheim's continued pressure, neither side could find a winner. The draw was likely more welcome for Hecking's Wolfsburg, who ended their losing streak, while Hoffenheim missed the chance to strengthen their grip on a European place.
Man of the Match: Konstantinos Koulierakis
The Greek defender proved decisive at both ends of the pitch for Wolfsburg. His well-taken header from Eriksen's corner gave the visitors a precious lead against the run of play, demonstrating excellent positioning and aerial prowess. Throughout the match, Koulierakis was a commanding presence in defence, helping to repel Hoffenheim's numerous attacks as they dominated possession.
His crucial intervention was all the more impressive given it came from a set-piece with an xG value of just 0.3, highlighting his ability to make the most of limited opportunities. His overall contribution was vital in securing a valuable point for Hecking's side.
