Frankfurt were looking to extend their five-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga, but they had to do so without top scorer Jonathan Burkardt, who was sidelined with a calf injury sustained during their Champions League defeat to Atalanta.

Wolfsburg came into the fixture on a run of seven defeats from their previous eight league matches, with interim coach Daniel Bauer seeking his first win since taking charge.

First-half chances at both ends

Frankfurt started the brighter of the two sides, with Ritsu Dōan looking lively on the right flank. The hosts had their first significant opportunity in the 12th minute when Mario Götze linked up well with Jean-Mattéo Bahoya before firing inches wide of the post.

Wolfsburg grew into the game and created their best chance in the 23rd minute when Christian Eriksen played a superb diagonal ball to Mohamed Amoura, who found himself free in the box but couldn't beat Michael Zetterer with his attempted chip.

Frankfurt nearly took the lead just before half-time when Arthur Theate saw his shot cleared off the line by Yannick Gerhardt following a corner.

Late drama at both ends

After the break, Wolfsburg looked more dangerous and went ahead in the 67th minute when Saël Kumbedi delivered an excellent cross from the right to Aaron Zehnter, who volleyed through Zetterer's legs.

Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller introduced Batshuayi in place of Götze, and the substitute would prove decisive.

Deep into stoppage time, a VAR review spotted Denis Vavro's foul on Theate, and Batshuayi stepped up to confidently convert the penalty in the 96th minute.

Man of the Match: Aaron Zehnter

Despite his team being denied victory at the death, Wolfsburg's Zehnter was voted Man of the Match for his all-around performance. The 21-year-old was a constant threat down the left side and took his goal superbly, meeting Kumbedi's cross with a first-time finish through the keeper's legs.

Zehnter had already shown his attacking intent earlier, firing over from a good position in the first-half. With two shots in the match, one of which found the net, he demonstrated why he was the standout performer on the day.
