Cologne’s Mikey Moore leading by example for England U20s
Less than a month after arriving at Cologne on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, Mikey Moore’s sharp upward trajectory has continued with a maiden England U20 call up - and the 19 year old was entrusted with the captaincy straight away.
Such faith in the youngster from head coach Darren Moore (no relation) was rewarded straight away. On his U20 debut against Italy last Friday, Moore led the Young Lions out as captain, starting on the left-wing and netting England’s second in a 3–1 win.
Four days later, Moore – once again sporting the armband - tormented France U20, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory from a more central playmaking position, showcasing on the international stage the versatility he has already become known for in Cologne.
It wasn’t only his goals that caught the eye. His all-round game and persistence in looking to play forward and drive at defenders was emblematic of his performances for the Billy Goats, for whom he ranks joint-second in shots taken (eight) behind only Saïd El Mala.
Next up for England U20 and Moore, however, is a tough test against Germany on 3 October after which the 19‑year‑old will return to Cologne before they resume their Bundesliga campaign in a fierce Matchday 5 derby at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach on 11 October, when fans of the Billy Goats will undoubtedly be hoping for Moore of the same from their in-form playmaker.
