Maximilian Beier's goal and assist helped Borussia Dortmund secure a hard-fought 2-1 win against Cologne, who played over half the match with 10 men following Jahmai Simpson-Pusey's first-half dismissal.

Dortmund came into the fixture looking to consolidate their second-place position after recent setbacks in the UEFA Champions League and defeat to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

Cologne, meanwhile, were desperate to arrest a slide that had seen them pick up just 10 points from their previous 15 matches, leaving them precariously positioned just two points above the relegation play-off spot.

Guirassy strikes first

Despite Dortmund entering as favourites, it was Cologne who started brighter. Youssoupha Niang, making his first Bundesliga start, tested Gregor Kobel with a decent header in the sixth minute. The hosts continued to apply pressure, winning five corners in the opening 15 minutes.

However, against the run of play, Dortmund struck first in the 16th minute. Beier looped a ball over the Cologne defence and Serhou Guirassy expertly poked it past Schwäbe to give the visitors the lead against one of his former clubs.

Red card turns the tide

Cologne continued to press forward despite falling behind, with Saïd El Mala and Niang causing problems on the flanks.

Just before half-time, however, disaster struck for the hosts when Simpson-Pusey was shown a straight red card. Initially cautioned for a challenge on Beier, referee Daniel Siebert upgraded the punishment to a dismissal after reviewing the incident on the pitch-side monitor, deeming the defender's studs-up tackle on Beier's heel to be dangerous play.

Beier doubles the advantage

Lukas Kwasniok made a tactical change at half-time, bringing on Cenk Özkacar for Ísak Jóhannesson to shore up his depleted defence.

Despite being a man down, Köln remained spirited and nearly equalised in the 57th minute when Jakub Kamiński forced a strong save from Kobel.

They were undone on the hour mark, however, when Beier exchanged passes with Julian Brandt before sweeping a composed finish into the far corner to make it 2-0 to Dortmund.

Late drama

Dortmund appeared to be cruising towards victory when a penalty shout was waved away after substitute Fábio Silva went down under Özkacar's challenge, with Siebert determining the defender had played the ball first after reviewing the incident.

Cologne, to their credit, never stopped fighting and were rewarded in the 88th minute when Kamiński's deflected strike beat Kobel, setting up a tense finale. Despite throwing everything forward, including goalkeeper Marwin Schwäbe for late corners, the hosts couldn't find an equaliser.

Man of the Match: Maximilian Beier

Beier was the difference-maker for Dortmund, delivering a complete performance that showcased both his creativity and finishing ability. His perfectly weighted assist for Guirassy's opener displayed his vision, while his clinical second-half strike demonstrated his composure in front of goal.

Beyond his direct goal contributions, the 21-year-old forward was a constant threat, registering three shots and handling the physical challenges of the match impressively.

Despite being one of the most pressed players on the pitch (under pressure 18 times), the young forward maintained his effectiveness throughout.
