Polanski took charge of Gladbach on an interim basis after Gerardo Seoane was dismissed in September 2025. The former Gladbach reserves coach was then handed the job on a permanent basis in November, on a contract running until June 2028.

Although nine wins and 10 draws from 31 Bundesliga matches under Polanski enabled Gladbach to finish nine points clear of the relegation zone, the Gladbach hierarchy took their time conducting a "sporting evaluation" of the season before deciding the club's direction.

Schröder said: "Eugen, as a young coach at his first Bundesliga club, has already overcome several challenges. He didn't have a long pre-season with the team to build something from scratch. He arrived in a difficult situation – and he embraced it, ultimately gaining success.

"He handled numerous high-pressure situations throughout the season. Last but not least: he fulfilled his aim, as we were determined to stay in the league. Now we want to give Eugen the opportunity to have a pre-season to implement his ideas."
