Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Germany U21 international goalkeeper Jonas Urbig from Bundesliga 2 club Cologne.

Urbig joins Bayern as competition for Daniel Peretz and Sven Ulreich in the back-role to first-choice stopper and club captain Manuel Neuer. The 21-year-old has signed a long-term deal through to 30 June 2029.

"Bayern are one of the biggest clubs in the world," Urbig told the club's website. "I'm proud to be here and I'm just looking forward to getting to know my new team as quickly as possible. My goal is to work professionally on my game each day and to continue to develop our goalkeeping group around Manuel Neuer."

Urbig has made 10 Bundesliga 2 appearances for boyhood club Cologne in 2024/25, adding to the 50 he racked up during formative loan spells with Greuther Fürth and Jahn Regensburg.

The 2017/18 U17 Bundesliga winner has been capped at every youth level with Germany, most recently representing the U21s in friendly action in November 2024.

"We're delighted that, in Jonas, we've been able to complete another transfer with an eye to the future," enthused Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund. "He's one of the most promising young goalkeepers in German football, very ambitious and has massive potential. Jonas is a modern goalkeeper who, with the way he interprets the game, fits in well with Bayern's style of play."

Urbig is seen as a potential long-term successor to Neuer (38), who is in the final six months of his contract.

As well as Peretz (24) and Ulreich (38), Bayern also have Alexander Nübel (28) on their books. The Germany international signed a contract extension with the Bavarian giants in April 2024, but is currently on loan at Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart until summer 2026, having first made the switch ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
