Bayer Leverkusen strengthen defence with Marseille’s Facundo Medina
Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the signing of Argentina international defender Facundo Medina from Marseille on a five-year contract through to 30 June 2031
"In Facundo Medina, we have signed a highly experienced professional who, thanks to his quality and strong mentality, will immediately be a key player for our team,” said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.
“He’s a player who excels in one-on-one situations: assertive and aggressive. Facundo’s qualities add an important element to our squad’s profile. We’re delighted to have him in our ranks.”
“Making the move to Bayer 04 in the Bundesliga is fantastic for me,” said Medina. “At the World Cup in North America, Exequiel Palacios told me a lot about the club and spoke very highly of Leverkusen.
"Pala has been here for so long and has enjoyed great success – that’s something I’d like to experience with Bayer 04 too.”
The 27-year-old, who will wear the number two jersey at Leverkusen, made 26 competitive appearances for Marseille in 2025/26, earning him a place in Lionel Scaloni’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
Medina played four games in North America, including coming on as a substitute in the final, as Argentina finished runners-up to Spain.
Prior to joining Marseille last summer, Medina featured 165 times for Lens, establishing himself as a leading defender in France’s top flight while guiding his former side to a runners-up finish in 2022/23.
Capable of playing at left-back while providing defensive cover in central positions, the Argentine becomes Leverkusen’s second defensive signing of the summer after Miguel Gutiérrez, who joined from Napoli.
Leverkusen begin their new season under new head coach Carles Martínez away to third-tier Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB Cup first round, before kicking off their Bundesliga campaign at newcomers Elversberg a week later.
