Full-time: Mainz 1-3 Union Berlin

Eta has her first win as Union head coach after two late goals turned the tie on its head. Mainz were much the better side in the second half and got one back through Becker. However, they missed big chances to get ahead and soon paid the price, as Burke staked his claim for a place in Steve Clarke's World Cup squad with a late dagger. Juranovic rounded out the three points in style after fine play from Skarke. The result means Mainz and Union are now separated by just two points in the Bundesliga table with one matchday remaining.

Game, set and match Union!

Mainz throw forward too many players in search of an equaliser and get caught out. Skarke receives the ball in behind the Mainz backline before rounding the keeper and laying the ball to his fellow substitute Juranovic for a simple tap-in. Eta has surely sealed her first win as Union head coach now!

Has Burke just won it!?

Right on cue, Berlin sucker-punch Mainz! Köhn sends in a long cross to the far post, where Ilić lays it off for Burke. The Scottish international receives the ball with his back to goal, turns on a dime, and fires it under the crossbar. Game over?

Ilić rattles the crossbar!

Union almost win it! Kemlein races away on the counter and does well to pick out the onrushing Ilić ahead of him. The forward shifts the ball away from his marker and unleashes a rasping shot from range, which dips at the last minute and strikes the bar. For all of Mainz's second half pressure, the visitors still carry a big threat going forward.

Both sides shake things up

Juranovic comes on for Union, replacing captain Trimmel. Meanwhile, Sieb and Wieper have entered the fray for the hosts, who are still looking the more likely to score.

Tietz thinks he has scored one of the goals of the season after a spectacular Zlatan-style volley from close range. However, the Mainz forward is penalised for a marginal offside infringement, and as such, the goal is ruled out.

Amiri whips in an inviting free kick from the right. Potulski comes flying in and gets his header on target, but it's too close to Klaus in the Union net, who parries the ball away.

An immediate response

At the other end of the pitch, Ilić fails to direct the ball goalwards after a free kick from Trimmel. The Mainz goalkeeper is ultimately there to make the stop.

Becker equalises!

The Mainz forward has scored against his former employer! Nebel is the architect, finding a pocket of space down the right side before floating a delicious cross into the Union box for Becker to latch onto. He does just that, after being afforded far too much space, and duly guides the ball into the corner of the net from a few yards out. Game on...

Half-time: Mainz 0-1 Union Berlin

Union head into the break with a narrow lead, and it's hard to say they don't deserve it. Ilić scored the opener after a nice short corner routine, with the forward also having another big chance early on from a Trimmel corner. Sano has been the danger man for Mainz, but aside from his late 1v1 chance, the home side have created very little of note. It's set up nicely heading into the second half.

Union threaten again

Moments later, Burcu gets into a similar position as Sano at the opposite end of the pitch. He tries to squeeze the ball inside the near post from a tight angle, but Zentner is equal to it. All of a sudden, the game has burst into life!

Sano denied!

The Japanese international is the man making things happen again. He powerfully bursts into the Union box, but Klaus rushes out well to close the angle and block the shot. That was Mainz's best chance of the half.

Union in control

Mainz have struggled to create anything of note so far. Union, by contrast, have created decent chances in the final third, and are overall good value for their lead. One word encapsulates Mainz so far - flat.

Visitors take the lead!

Ilić makes no mistake this time! A short Union corner routine sees the ball come out to Kemlein on the edge of the box, who swings a teasing cross towards the far post. Ilić gets there ahead of the stranded Zentner, and heads the ball into an empty net. The drought is over for the Union striker.

Sustained pressure from Mainz

For the first time tonight, the home side have pinned Union back in their own half. Sano has had a pair of shots blocked, while Potulski was very nearly played in behind the Berlin backline after a clever Becker through-ball.

Marie-Louise Eta on facing Mainz

"I’m looking forward to seeing Urs Fischer and the ex-Union players like Sheraldo [Becker] again but, at the end of today, it’s about the game and trying to get all three points. Urs has done a fantastic job, picking up so many points in such a short time. They’re a very good side. We’ll put out our best possible team to try and beat them."
camera-photo

Urs Fischer on facing Union

"It’s not easy to defend against them, especially when it comes to second balls. They have tremendous pace in attack, which can be particularly dangerous in transition. We also mustn’t concede too many set-pieces, because they have scored many of their goals from set plays. There are a few challenges we need to tackle, but of course, we also want to stick to our own game plan."

Ilić to equal record?

While he has scored just two goals this season, Andrej Ilić has managed eight assists in the Bundesliga. Not only is that a team-high this term, it is also one behind the all-time single-campaign club record held by Christopher Trimmel (nine).

Fischer appointment behind Mainz survival

When Fischer joined the club in December, Mainz were five points adrift of the relegation play-off position. Now, they have an 11-point lead over 16th place and are safe for another season. As it stands, Fischer has averaged more points per game (1.6) than any other Mainz head coach, and will hope to build on that as Mainz embark on their 18th successive top-flight campaign in 2026/27.
