Fujita from range!

The ball falls to the Japanese midfielder, and he arrows a shot at goal. However, Batz does very well to get down low and hold onto the ball. Will Pauli get another chance?

Not far away from Mwene

The Mainz man almost scores his second after unleashing a shot from the edge of the Pauli box. His effort whizzes narrowly wide of Vasilj's left post.

Pauli get one back!

Pauli have scored with three minutes of normal time remaining. The two substitute strikers combine, as Kaars plays in Ceesay with a clever through ball, who just about squeezes the ball past Batz in the Mainz goal. Can Blessin's men nick a valuable point?

Changes for both sides

Mainz bring on Weiper and Maloney for goalscorer Tietz and Amiri. Pauli, meanwhile, have used their final sub to bring Rasmussen into the midfield.
camera-photo

Game is becoming stretched

The introduction of Kaars and Cessay has added an extra dimension to Pauli's play, which was all too predicatable in the first half. The pace fo the attacking duo has troubled Mainz a lot more than Andréas Hountondji did previously.

Ball Recovery Time

info-small
Ball Recovery Time
Ball Recovery Time gives the time in seconds in which it takes a team to win back the ball following a loss of possession. It also allows conclusions to be drawn about a team's style of play. Only time when the ball is in play is counted (i.e. no breaks in play such as for goal-kicks, throw-ins etc).

Another Mainz change

Caci replaces Widmer at wing-back, who has run himself into the ground for the 05ers today.
76'

Big chance for Pauli!

The home side have the chance to launch a counter attack of their own for the first real time today. Ceesay gets in behind the Mainz backline and squares the ball for Kaars in the penalty area. However, the Mainz defenders get back brilliantly to stop the Dutchman from rolling the ball into an empty net.
73'

First Mainz change

Sieb replaces Becker in a defensive switch, as Mainz look to close out the three points.
71'

It's raining corners

St. Pauli are pushing for a way back into this one. The home side have a series of corners, but Mainz just about managed to clear the ball to safety each time. From open play, however, Pauli remain fairly toothless.
67'

Double Pauli change

Kaars and Ceesay replace Hountondji and the influential Smith, whose set-pieces have been Pauli's biggest threat today.
camera-photo

Tietz hits the bar!

How on earth have Mainz only scored two? The visitors have another big chance through Tietz, who heads Widmer's cross onto the crossbar. Mwene's follow-up shot from a few yards out is then blocked on the line by a Pauli defender. Somehow, Pauli are still in this one.
61'

Wahl to the rescue

Amiri's corner picks out Sano. The Mainz midfielder shoots at goal, but Wahl is there in the nick of time to block it.
57'

Uphill task for Pauli

In order to win this game, Pauli need to score three goals. The only time they've scored three this season was on the first matchday of the season in a 3-3 draw with BVB. Overall, they have never won a Bundesliga game after going two goals down.
53'

Almost 3-0!

Amiri switches to the right this time and hangs up a lovely cross to the far post. Becker gets there, but Vasilj scrambles across his line and makes a crucial save to keep his side in it. Suffice to say, the home faithful aren't impressed with what they're seeing at the moment...
49'

Amiri from a tight angle...

Tietz picks out the German international in acres of space on the left side of the Pauli box. He drops the shoulder and beats the newly-introduced Dźwigała with ease, but Amiri's shot from an acute angle is well saved by the Pauli stopper.
46'

Second half gets going!

Here we go then - can Pauli get themselves back into this one? They've brought on Dźwigała and Metcalfe to try and turn the tide.

Half-time: Pauli 0-2 Mainz

Mainz head into the half-time break with a two-goal cushion after a pretty one-sided half at the Millernor. Tietz and Mwene both got on the scoresheet, capitalising on Pauli's inability to sustain any attacking pressure. Mainz are now 45 minutes away from safety, while the home side's hopes of dragging themselves out of the relegation scrap are quickly beginning to fade. They'll need to be much better in the second period to get anything today.

Mainz pushing for a third

They may only need a point to ensure survival, but Mainz are going for the jugular here. Their wing-backs are still high up the pitch, looking to get in behind at every opportunity.

Stoppage time

Three minutes have been added on at the end of the first half after the Ritzka and Tietz clash of heads. Pauli are still struggling to create anything of note as we approach the break.

Mwene makes it 2-0!

Pauli are in big trouble here! Tietz starts the move with some terrific forward play, holding off a Pauli defender before laying the ball into the path of Widmer on the right. He then flashes it across the Pauli area, where an unmarked Mwene is waiting to finish the move in style. Mainz head coach Fischer will be delighted with what he has seen from his side so far.

Free header for Posch

Amiri whips in a lovely corner kick from the right side, picking out Posch at the back post. Despite being virtually unchallenged, the Mainz defender can only head the ball straight at Vasilj in the Pauli net.
35'

Ritzka and Tietz are back on

The pair look fine to continue after their collision. Tietz needs a change of shirt due to some blood on his original. Nice...
camera-photo

Clash of heads

Ritzka and Tietz challenge for the ball inside the Pauli area, but end up clashing heads. Tietz is currently receiving treatment on the pitch.
camera-photo

Last-ditch Pauli defending

Amiri is the man making things happen again for Mainz. The ball falls to him twice inside Pauli's box, but on both occasions, his shots are well blocked. Pressure is building on the besieged hosts...
27'

Lightening counter

Sano wins the ball back in the middle of the pitch and immediately sets Becker away on a counter attack. The Mainz forward cuts inside the Pauli penalty area, but his attempted cross is well read by Wahl, who intercepts.
24'

Pauli frustrated

They have been stifled in the last five minutes or so by the disciplined visitors. There's a big disconnect between the home side's midfield and attack, with Hountondji looking especially isolated up front for Pauli.
20'

Vasilj sweeps up

Mainz continue to pose a threat on the counter. A long ball from Amiri nearly finds the onrushing Widmer, but the Pauli keeper is there to thwart the move.
camera-photo

(Almost) brilliant from Amiri!

The Mainz talisman almost wriggles his way past the whole Pauli backline. He works room to shoot inside the Pauli box, but Wahl just about gets a touch on the ball and deflects it away for a corner - which comes to nothing.
13'

Smith threatens again

The Swede whips in a deep free kick to the near post. Irvine is there, but his toe-poked effort is a yard or two wide of the Mainz goal. Unsurprisingly, Pauli's biggest weapon today looks to be their set-piece routines.
10'

Pauli back on the ball

Blessin's side are trying to get back on level terms after their nightmare start. They're passing the ball around well, but posing little threat from open play thus far.
camera-photo

Mainz take the lead!

What a hit that is! The visitors respond brilliantly to Pauli's early pressure by doing some pressing of their own. Becker pounces on a mistake from Wahl and squares the ball to Tietz inside the Pauli penalty area, who hammers the ball past a helpless Vasilj. Mainz are 83 minutes away from Bundesliga safety!

First corner goes to hosts

Pauli have put Mainz under some good early pressure, and their reward is an early corner. Smith hits it hard and low to Wahl, whose goalward shot is well blocked. A second corner is met by Andō, but his header is well cleared by Da Costa at the back post.

Pauli team news

Blessin has made two changes from the side that lost 2-0 in Heidenheim on MD31. Smith starts for the first time since his injury layoff (last seen on Matchday 27), replacing Rasmussen in midfield. Ritzka is selected at left wing-back in the absence of Saliakas, marking the 27-year-old's 100th competitive appearance for Pauli.
camera-photo

Mainz team news

Mainz make only one change to their starting lineup after the 4-3 defeat against Bayern Munich last time out. Kohr, who is presumably not fully fit, will start on the bench for the first time in over two years despite being only partially available. He is replaced in defence by youngster Potulski, who last played in the 1-1 draw in Leverkusen on Matchday 24.
camera-photo

How can Mainz secure safety?

It's been a remarkable turnaround under Urs Fischer, who took charge with Mainz rooted at the bottom of division after 13 matches. Should the 05ers avoid defeat against St. Pauli, they will secure Bundesliga football for an 18th straight season.

Nikola Vasilj on if St. Pauli can stay up

"You have to have belief and we have the belief that we can do it. That’s important, even when things don’t go quite as we’d hoped. We need to stay positive and maintain a positive mindset. We have to do the basics to a high standard and play to our full potential."

Sam Klein joins St. Pauli

The Hamburg-based side have confirmed the signing of Australian midfielder Sam Klein, who will join in the summer, from Brisbane Roar. "The club has successfully integrated and improved foreign players on a number of occasions in recent years, including from Australia. The board has outlined an exciting project and I’m convinced this is the right move for me," he said.
camera-photo

Alexander Blessin on facing Mainz

"When we have opportunities, we need to be quick but we have to be careful because they defend well and win the ball back effectively. Their back line is very aggressive. They have a good team and we'll have to deliver another top performance against them if we want to get anything out of the game."
camera-photo

Urs Fischer on facing St. Pauli

"It would be nice if I could look into the future and already know the result, but I expect it to be a very intense, close game. It's a clash of two teams that rely on physicality, pose a threat from set pieces and won't give each other much space."
