Full time: Mainz 3-4 Bayern

What a fightback! Mainz were outstanding in the first 45 minutes and deservedly led 3-0 at the break, but Bayern came thundering back after the interval. They kept plugging away and eventually their quality told, particularly after the introductions of Musiala, Kane and Olise. An incredible game!

Bayern pull one back!

It's a very similar one to Kohr's opener as Laimer scurries into space down the right-hand side of the Mainz box and floats a cross towards the back post. Jackson hits it on the volley to reduce the deficit!

Half-time: Mainz 3-0 Bayern

Mainz are on course for a much-needed win that would mathematically keep them up – and they deserve their lead too. Vincent Kompany rotated his side heavily with an eye on the upcoming midweek UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against PSG, but his team struggled to get going. Mainz have been clinical, with Amiri, Sano and Nebel all excelling.

Mainz make it three!

Wow! Amiri is involved again as Mainz charge forward once more down the left. He cuts inside and unleashes a powerful shot that Urbig tips onto the crossbar. The ball loops up and has so much back spin on it that it bounces towards goal - Becker prods it in from close range just to make sure!

Urbig double save!

Fine work from the Bayern keeper! Becker takes on Ito inside the box and gets a shot away that Urbig blocks. The rebound sits up nicely for Amiri, who goes for power over precision from 16 yards, but hammers his shot straight at the goalkeeper, who saves with his shoulder.

Bayern eyeing best ever season

Having already clinched their 35th German title, the Bavarians are now aiming for more new records. If they win their last four league matches, the Munich outfit would finish the season on 91 points, which would equal the record tally set in 2012/13 under Jupp Heynckes. The goal difference from that season was +80 (98:18), which Vincent Kompany’s Bayern would surpass (currently also +80; 109:29).
camera-photo

Remarkable turnaround

The reverse fixture in Munich marked Urs Fischer's first game in charge of Mainz, who were rooted to the bottom of the table at the time. Now, although they have not won any of their last three competitive matches, survival is almost secured. Victory over Bayern, coupled with a St. Pauli draw or defeat against Heidenheim, would guarantee Mainz's Bundesliga status for another year.
