What a fightback! Mainz were outstanding in the first 45 minutes and deservedly led 3-0 at the break, but Bayern came thundering back after the interval. They kept plugging away and eventually their quality told, particularly after the introductions of Musiala, Kane and Olise. An incredible game!

Having already clinched their 35th German title, the Bavarians are now aiming for more new records. If they win their last four league matches, the Munich outfit would finish the season on 91 points, which would equal the record tally set in 2012/13 under Jupp Heynckes. The goal difference from that season was +80 (98:18), which Vincent Kompany’s Bayern would surpass (currently also +80; 109:29).

Remarkable turnaround

The reverse fixture in Munich marked Urs Fischer's first game in charge of Mainz, who were rooted to the bottom of the table at the time. Now, although they have not won any of their last three competitive matches, survival is almost secured. Victory over Bayern, coupled with a St. Pauli draw or defeat against Heidenheim, would guarantee Mainz's Bundesliga status for another year.
