Freiburg are through to their first European semi-final after thrashing Celta Vigo on Thursday. Already 3-0 up in the tie following the first leg, Julian Schuster's team coasted to a 3-1 win in Spain on Thursday to continue their Europa League fairy-tale.

Familiar faces

Freiburg's Niklas Beste played for Heidenheim between 2022 and 2024, and was involved in 24 goals during their promotion-winning campaign. Eren Dinkçi played alongside Beste during 2023/24, where he racked up 10 goals and four assists before switching to Freiburg, where he failed to score in 31 league appearances, prompting a loan move back to Heidenheim. This season, the 24-year-old has one goal in 10 league games.

With only 24 goals in their first 26 games, Heidenheim have finally found their shooting boots with eight goals in their last three outings (averaging 2.7 goals per game) - bettered only by three teams in the same period. Contrasting styles

While Freiburg like to play neat, short passes and rarely play long balls, Heidenheim are far more direct in their attacking transitions. Only Werder Bremen have played more long passes then Schmidt's side this season.
