Full-time: Freiburg 2-1 Heidenheim

The hosts followed up on their European success with a hard fought win at home to Heidenheim, who at one point looked like they might be the ones scoring a late winner. Having equalised through a fantastic Zivzivadze finish Frank Schmidt's men were piling the pressure on Freiburg, only for Eggestein to hit them with a crushing blow in the final minutes of the game.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
There's little to separate the two sides in terms of xG.

Half-time: Freiburg 1-0 Heidenheim

The hosts take a slender lead into the break having grown into the game and caused the visitors real problems as the half developed. Heidenheim did threaten on occasion too, but couldn't quite find that final pass and will need to come from behind if they're to snatch a result here.

Frank Schmidt on facing Freiburg

"I need to praise what Freiburg are going over recent weeks, months - the whole season. They've been doing a lot well, which was backed up again on Thursday [against Celta Vigo]. Even though we know Freiburg well, you see in the results that you don't automatically get results against them. Their recent Bundesliga results have all been close. That means we want to keep it tight and have the chance to get something."
camera-photo

Julian Schuster on Freiburg extending their European adventure

"I’m already overwhelmed. I feel a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude that we get to experience exactly these moments together. Gratitude, too, that the team was able to prove it again today, that they picked up exactly where they left off last week—that this is anything but a given, but rather very, very impressive. And then, to pull it off over 180 minutes against this opponent today, especially in this stadium. In conclusion, I’m very grateful."

Freiburg in dreamland

Freiburg are through to their first European semi-final after thrashing Celta Vigo on Thursday. Already 3-0 up in the tie following the first leg, Julian Schuster's team coasted to a 3-1 win in Spain on Thursday to continue their Europa League fairy-tale.
camera-photo

Familiar faces

Freiburg's Niklas Beste played for Heidenheim between 2022 and 2024, and was involved in 24 goals during their promotion-winning campaign. Eren Dinkçi played alongside Beste during 2023/24, where he racked up 10 goals and four assists before switching to Freiburg, where he failed to score in 31 league appearances, prompting a loan move back to Heidenheim. This season, the 24-year-old has one goal in 10 league games.
camera-photo

Heidenheim's attack clicking

With only 24 goals in their first 26 games, Heidenheim have finally found their shooting boots with eight goals in their last three outings (averaging 2.7 goals per game) - bettered only by three teams in the same period. Additionally, 18 players have found the net for Schmidt's charges this season, a number matched by Bayern Munich and Frankfurt.
camera-photo

Contrasting styles

While Freiburg like to play neat, short passes and rarely play long balls, Heidenheim are far more direct in their attacking transitions. Only Werder Bremen have played more long passes then Schmidt's side this season.
