Watch: Eta on Union's situation

camera-photo

Full-time: Union Berlin 1-2 Wolfsburg

Die Wölfe just about hang on for a huge three points in the relegation battle. Two brilliant strikes from Wimmer and Pejčinović gave Hecking's men a 2-0 lead, which looked like it would be enough to seal the win. Burke handed Union a late lifeline with five minutes remainng, but they simply couldn't find an equaliser in stoppage time due to some fine goalkeeping from Grabara. Eta will have to wait another week to pick up her first win as Union coach.

Brilliant save from Grabara!

How big could that be? A long ball causes chaos inside the Wolfsburg box, and it eventually falls at the feet of Doehki from 12 yards out. He pokes it goalwards, but Grabara just about manages to save it with an outstretched foot. Wolfsburg survive for the time being.

Game on!

Burke gets a goal back for Union! The home side spring a quick counter-attack, with Ilić expertly holding the ball up, before flicking it into the path of Burke. The Scottish forward races through on goal and beats Grabara with a clinical slotted finish into the right corner. Can they conjure up an equaliser in the final minutes?

Speculative efforts at goal

Unable to break down the home side, Union have been reduced to shooting from range. Trimmel's effort is blocked, while Schäfer's, from 30 or so yards out, flies into the stand.
82'

Not too far away from Daghim...

Wolfsburg are able to clear their lines after another Trimmel corner and launch swift counter in the opposite direction. The ball comes out on the left to Daghim, who shoots from a narrow angle, and misses the target by mere inches.
78'

Khedira picks up a yellow card

The Union man rivals Koulierakis for the ball, but his foot is too high. Unsurprisingly, he goes into the referee's book.
76'

Another wasted effort

Trimmel's corner is cleared but lands at the feet of Skarke, who has just come on, but his attempt from inside the penalty area floats well over the bar.
71'

Wolfsburg follow suit

Hecking also makes a double switch. Gerhardt comes on for goalscorer Wimmer, with Daghim replacing Amoura.

Double Union change

Ghana international Köhn replaces Rothe at wing-back, while Skarke is on for Ansah in attack, who has struggled in front of goal today. Ansah is not happy with the decision, throwing his water bottle in anger...

The Wolfsburg stopper does well to get ahead of the onrushing Burke and punch Trimmel's cross to safety. Grabara is attentive to the danger moments later, racing off his line to deny Ilić.

Union building pressure

Wolfsburg have been pinned inside their own box in the last five minutes or so. However, nothing Union are doing in front of goal is having the desired effect. As such, Eta is about to make her first substitute as Union head coach...

Union hit the post!

Trimmel whips in another superb cross from the right byline. Ilić meets it well inside the Wolfsburg box, but his header takes a deflection of a defender's head, and crashes off the right post. Fortune really is favouring Hecking's side so far today...

Close from Doekhi!

Trimmel tries to redeem himself immediately with a free-kick from the left. He swings the ball into the Wolfsburg penalty area, and after an attempted clearance, it falls at the feet of Doekhi from a few yards out. However, he snaps at the chance and stabs the ball wide.

Wolfsburg double their lead!

What a start to the half! Trimmel is dispossessed in a dangerous area, and Eriksen works the ball forward into the path of Pejčinović. The forward cuts inside and shoots from the edge of the Union box, picking out the far corner of the net beautifully with finesse. Wolfsburg's luck appears to have turned!

Half-time: Union 0-1 Wolfsburg

The away side lead at the break after a sublime early goal from Wimmer. Union have created several good chances to equalise, most notably through Ansah. However, they haven't been able to find a way past Grabara in the Wolfsburg goal just yet. As things stand, Union head coach Eta is heading for defeat on her Bundesliga debut.

Corner for Wolfsburg

It's their first opportunity to attack with intent since the goal. The initial corner is defended well but Union, by Zehnter powerfully drives the ball goalward on the rebound, and forces a decent save from Rønnow.

Amoura treated

The Wolfsburg forward is caught in the face by the trailing arm of Querfeld. After some treatment from the medical staff, he looks fine to continue.

Wolfsburg look comfortable

The away side have dropped right back into a low block and are soaking up pressure very well. Khedira is the latest player to try his luck for Union, but his long-range effort flies well over the crossbar.

Big chance for Ansah!

Trimmel is the man making things happen again. He whips in a deep cross from the right, picking out Ansah, who is only a few yards out. However, the forward gets his angles all wrong and heads the ball well wide. The momentum is very much with the home side...
18'

Doekhi heads over!

Union create another good opening. This time, a Rothe cross comes in from the left side, which is met well by Doekhi. He puts a bit too much on it, and the ball drops onto the roof of the net.
15'

Ansah forces a save

Union try to strike back immediately. Querfeld heads the ball down inside the Wolfsburg box, picking out an unmarked Ansah. His shot from 15 yards out is well saved by Grabara, who is able to parry the ball away.

Wolfsburg take the lead!

What a hit that is! Wimmer finds himself in a pocket of space centrally and drives forward with the ball. He then powers his way to the edge of the Union box, and unleashes a stunning outside-of-the-boot shot, which flies into the left corner of the net. It's a dream start for Hecking...

Marie-Louise Eta on facing Wolfsburg

"They have a lot of attacking players, who bring pace and intelligence to the game. It will be important for us to keep that in check. At the same time, the way they play will create space that we want to exploit. I'm convinced that we can effectively neutralise their threat."

Dieter Hecking on facing Union

"There'll be a different dynamic and energy under the new coach. We'll have to watch out for their physicality, strong tackling and long balls. It's going to be a really, really tough battle, but we have to rise to the challenge. Sixteenth place is most realistic for us right now, but we have to start picking up points and Pauli need to slip up."
