Full-time: Leipzig 1-0 Gladbach

After grafting for much of the afternoon, Leipzig snatch a late winner through their teenage sensation Diomande. It's no less than Die Roten Bullen deserved, having peppered the Gladbach goal throughout the 90, but it looked as though Nicolas would not be beaten until the Ivorian winger stepped up with a piece of individual brilliance. The Foals had a huge chance to equalise mere minutes after going behind, but it seemed that fortune favoured the brave this afternoon in Saxony.

+ 6

One last chance?

Beyond the four allotted minutes, Gladbach have two corners. The first comes in from the left and is cleared as far as Bolin, whose volleyed effort is deflected behind for another set-piece. Gladbach repeat the routine, but this time, Leipzig manage to clear more convincingly. That should surely do it...

The goalscorer departs

After returning to his feet, Diomande, who scored what seems to be the decisive goal here, leaves the field to rapturous applause before being replaced by Finkgräfe.

Shot blocked

Diomande and Bakayoko spearhead a Leipzig counter. The former beats Elvedi and Chiarodia before Bakayoko takes the ball off his foot to hit a shot. However, his effort is blocked before it can reach Nicolas' goal.
86'

Triple change

With time running out, Polanski makes a triple substitution, introducing Stöger, Mohya and Machino as his side chase a late equaliser.
84'

How did that stay out?!

Gladbach were so close to a leveller there! Engelhardt swings a cross in from the left, finding Chiarodia, six yards out. The defender guides the ball onto the crossbar before the rebound almost falls for Tabaković, but Leipzig scramble it to safety.

Diomande has done it!

Leipzig have the go-ahead goal and who else but Diomande to provide it?! Baumgartner leads a Leipzig counter. He threads a ball through for Diomande to chase. The Ivorian slows down, goes past Scally, and picks his spot in the far bottom corner, coolly dispatching his 11th league goal of the campaign. What a strike!

Double change

Another double alteration from Leipzig. This time, it's Gruda and Henrichs who enter the fray, replacing Seiwald and Baku. Can the substitutes help their side break the deadlock late on here?
77'

Schlager this time!

Will the Gladbach keeper ever be beaten this afternoon?! Baku cuts it back from the byline into the path of Schlager, whose effort from inside the box is once again saved by the Foals' custodian.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The xG values indicate that both sides should be worth at least a goal by now, with the hosts unfortunate not to be two up. Nicolas has continued his eye-catching form from the first half into the second, though, and is not letting Leipzig through.

Raum!

The left-back plays a one-two inside the Gladbach box before aiming a low shot towards the far corner. Once again though, it's Nicolas who comes up trumps with the save.
73'

Back post

From the right, Honorat floats a great ball towards the back post, where Tabaković arrives, but the Bosnian can't quite manage to steer his finish on target.
69'

Slips

Bakayoko cuts in off the right flank before teeing up a left-footed shot. Just before striking the ball, though, he slips, allowing the Gladbach defence to make an easy block.
67'

Double change

Werner rolls the dice to try and inject increased attacking impetus into his side. He introduces Bakayoko and Ouédraogo for Rômulo and Nusa. Diomande has moved out to the left as a result.

Free header

Raum swings a corner in from the right, finding the head of Rômulo, who, under little pressure, miscues his header and sends it behind for a goal-kick.

Taking control

Whilst both sides had chances in the first half, it's been all Leipzig so far this second half. Given their superiority in the chances, Ole Werner will be wondering how his side aren't leading here...

Diomande causing problems

The winger injects some momentum once again, dribbles past Bolin on the right byline and squares it into the middle. But a defender gets there ahead of Rômulo.

Hasn't had a sniff

Haris Tabakovic (r.) - Gladbach's top scorer this term with 11 - has yet to get a shot on target. Leipzig's center-backs have done well to keep him quiet so far this afternoon.
52'

From distance

Vandevoordt launches the ball up to Rômulo. The Brazilian touches it down for Raum, who hits a half volley from around 30 yards. He strikes it well, forcing a good stop - but one you'd expect him to make - from Nicolas.
51'

Diomande tries to beat Castrop to the byline, but the Gladbach man sticks tight to the Ivorian before blocking his cross behind for a corner.
49'

Raum makes space for a shot from a tight angle high up on the left flank but can only fire his effort over the bar.

Half-time: Leipzig 0-0 Gladbach

So, it's level pegging at the break here in Leipzig. The Foals have done well to frustrate the hosts, who have consistently carved out chances - particularly down the flanks - but Gladbach keeper Nicolas has pulled off some remarkable saves to deny Die Roten Bullen an opener. It hasn't been one-way traffic, however, with both Castrop and Bolin going close for the Foals, but both sides will need to be more clinical in front of goal if the deadlock is to be broken here in the second half.

Baku plays a one-two with Baumgartner on the edge of the box. After receiving it back, he tries to bend a shot into the top left corner with his weaker left foot, but can only send it looping over the bar.

More in that

Leipzig counter quickly from Gladbach's corner. Diomande sends Baku on his bike, who has Nusa in support, but the No.17 tries to pick out the Norwegian too quickly, allowing Elvedi to recover and intercept.
24'

Mishit

The ball pops up for Ullrich to hit inside the Leipzig penalty area, but the left-back shanks the contact sending it wide. It does take a deflection on its way behind however, earning Gladbach a corner.
22'

Narrowly wide

Scally curls a deep cross from the right flank towards the far post, where Castrop rises high to win the header. The South Korean international tries to place it back across goal, but drags his effort wide of the post.

Gladbach are by no means out of the contest, but Leipzig have certainly enjoyed a more productive opening phase in front of goal.

Superb from Nicolas again!

Diomande slips Baku through to the byline from where the right-back digs out a cutback to Rômulo. The Brazilian connects with the shot first time from close range, but Gladbach's keeper is there again to deny him, tipping the ball behind for a corner, upon which Leipzig don't manage to capitalise.
18'

Vandevoordt alert to Castrop danger

Gladbach turn defence into attack superbly. Elvedi lofts a ball over the Leipzig backline for Castrop to chase. There are calls for offside, but Raum had been playing him on. In the end, the South Korean international can only aim his finish straight at the onrushing Vandevoordt.
15'

Nicolas denies Baku

Baku exchanges passes with Schlager and Diomande before seeing his shot comfortably saved by Nicolas.

One to watch

The battle between Diomande and Ullrich will be one to keep a close eye on this afternoon. Leipzig's young Ivorian has started the game very brightly and is repeatedly looking to attack, but Ullrich has dealt with him well so far.

Unbelievable stop!

Raum does brilliantly to beat Scally down the left before cutting the ball back from the touchline into the path of the arriving Baku. The right-back's shot is a powerful one, but Nicolas pulls off a spectacular reaction save to keep the scores level!
8'

Physical challenge

Reitz plays Diks into trouble and Baumgartner picks the Indonesian's pocket before being cleaned out by Gladbach's No.4. The referee keeps his cards in his pocket despite Baumgartner taking a while to get to his feet. He's back up now, though, and is set to continue.
6'

First corner

Diomande beats two markers before drilling a low cross towards the front post, where the ball is cleared behind for a corner. Raum swings it in from the right, but Gladbach deal with it comfortably.
5'

Ambitious

Ullrich threads a ball through to the byline for Castrop, who strikes it first time on the half volley from a tight angle. He connects with the shot well, but ultimately launches it over the bar.
3'

Woodwork!

A huge early chance to take the lead falls to Leipzig's captain. Diomande shifts in off the right flank before picking out an unmarked Raum. The left-back floats a cross-shot into the box, which leaves Nicolas stumped before it ricochets off the post. Gladbach scramble the second ball to safety.

Extra source of motivation?

Whilst Leipzig will be looking to consolidate third place with a victory over Gladbach, Die Roten Bullen would be wise not to underestimate them. Not only are the Foals unbeaten in their last three, captain Rocco Reitz (pictured), who will be joining Leipzig in the summer, starts against his future employer. Coach Polanski thinks this could give the midfielder a boost, saying: “When you’re playing against your future club, you want to show yourself in the best possible light.”

More on that Leipzig side

Ole Werner makes just the one change to the line-up he fielded for last week's 2-1 victory over Werder Bremen. Lukeba misses out nursing a muscular issue. As such, Bitshiabu (pictured) moves into the heart of defence.

Ole Werner on facing Gladbach

"Gladbach are a strong team who are good on the ball and always manage to pull their opponents out of position. They're still looking over their shoulders to a certain extent, but they're in decent form. We're going to need to play very well to beat them."

Eugen Polanski on facing Leipzig

"I'd like to win every game, but I knew when I took the job that it was going to be a difficult season. It's in our hands, so we're staying calm. We did very well at home to Leipzig earlier this season. We have the quality to beat anyone on our day. I'm confident we can cause them problems again this time."

Another tight encounter in store?

Alassane Pléa's header in Gladbach's 1-0 victory over Leipzig on Matchday 27 last season is the only goal in the last three meetings between these sides, who also played out a goalless draw at the Red Bull Arena back in November 2024.
