Full-time: Heidenheim 3-1 Union Berlin

Heidenheim breathe life back into their survival bid with a win over Union. Mathias Honsak was his side's hero in the first half, scoring his first two goals of the season to put his team in control. While Union did pull one back through Leopold Querfeld, Budu Zivzivadze settled any late nerves with a fantastic finish. Remarkably, Heidenheim are now unbeaten in 12 league games against Union, with this victory ending a run of 15 Bundesliga fixtures without a win.

Union still pushing

The away team are still looking for a way back into this one, but it looks unlikely right now.

History made as Güther comes on

Union bring on Güther, aged 16 years and 3 days, as they look to find a way back into this clash. He is therefore Union's youngest-ever player, and the second-youngest in Bundesliga history.

Breathing space once more

Zivzavadze has made an impact inside 10 minutes of his introduction, hammering into the top corner from inside the area. Heidenheim needed that - can they now see out the remainder of the game for all three points?

Lifeline!

Union are back in this one! From the resulting corner, the balls finds its way to Querfeld after some penalty box pinball, and he buries with aplomb. Game on!

Great stop

Ilić finally forces a strong stop from Ramaj, as the goalkeeper tips his header over the bar.

Save

A first shot on target for Union as Ilić heads straight at Ramaj. That was a sign of life from the visitors, at least.

Need inspiration

Union have to improve if they are to get something out of this game. Baumgart will hope Rothe and Skarke can help his side's fortunes.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Heidenheim are well on top in terms of xGoals, which is reflected by the scoreline.

Half-time: Heidenheim 2-0 Union Berlin

Bottom club Heidenheim are two to the good at the break. Mathias Honsak has been his side's hero on this occasion, netting his first two goals of the season to give the hosts hope in their battle to beat the drop. Union have been second best from start to the finish and must improve significantly after the interval.

Heidenheim pushing

The home team are aiming to put the game beyond doubt before half-time, as Mainka heads past the post from a Busch cross. This has been an impressive display from Heidenheim.

Honsak again!

Honsak goals are like London busses, it seems! Again, he is able to sneak in after a ball is flicked on by Mainka and volley past Rønnow. There is plenty of life in Heidenheim yet!

Schmidt will be happy

The home head coach will be pleased with his side's display so far. They are in front, and have also kept the side from the capital at bay.
24'

Endeavour

Union are battling for every ball and have found themselves in a couple of promising positions, but Ramaj has still be a passenger for the most part.
18'

Wide

Heidenheim go close, with Busch driving towards the edge of the area before putting an attempt narrowly wide of the post.
17'

Looking for a response

So far, Union have been unable to really test Ramaj between the Heidenheim sticks. The Köhn shot early on remains their only real opening so far.
12'

Even in possession

While both teams have seen similar amounts of the ball, Heidenheim have made their spell in possession count.

Lift off!

Heidenheim move in front with the game's first shot on target. Pieringer delivers a fantastic ball into the box, and Honsak is there to volley home his first Bundesliga goal of the season from close range.

Frank Schmidt on facing Union

"They know exactly what they need to do to survive in the Bundesliga. They're very robust and physical. I think our recent games have been decent in terms of the performance. Now we need to try and cut out the mistakes. We had the Gladbach game completely under control but then dropped off defensively and were immediately punish. The team knows we need to cut that out immediately."

Landmark appearance for Union youngster?

Much speculation has surrounded Union's Linus Güther recently, who only turned 16 on Wednesday and could potentially make his senior debut against Heidenheim. The young winger trained with the senior team during the international break and has already impressed Steffen Baumgart, who said of him: "“He showed what he can do on the ball — and very quickly earned a lot of respect[...] We’ll see after the final training session on Friday whether he makes the squad.” If he plays, Güther will become the second-youngest Bundesliga debutant in history after Dortmund's Youssoufa Moukoko, aged 16 years and three days.

Steffen Baumgart on facing Heidenheim

"They're a team who never give up, which makes them very difficult to beat. I haven't managed to get the better of Frank Schmidt in the Bundesliga yet. Heidenheim always have their moments, no matter who they're up against. We go there determined to get three points, but we know it's going to be tough."

Union's speed demon

Oliver Burke clocked up the fastest speed of the 2025/26 season so far against St. Pauli last weekend, hitting a staggering 37.0 km/h. Eintracht Frankfurt's Jean-Mattéo Bahoya is the only Bundesliga player since 2011 to have hit a faster top speed (37.2 km/h).

Long time coming

After draws with Bayer Leverkusen and Gladbach, Heidenheim have avoided defeat in two successive games for the first time in 2026. However, they haven't won in 15.

Hope for hosts

Heidenheim have never lost in the Bundesliga to Union, winning four - including the last three - and drawing one.
camera-photo

Goals don't come easy

Union have scored just eight goals across their last 10 Bundesliga games and only scored more than once in one of their previous 12. Four of their five wins in that period were by 1-0 scorelines.
