Paul Nebel on a vital three points

camera-photo

Full-time: Werder Bremen 0-2 Mainz

Mainz take a crucial three points from Bremen in this basement battle, in a game where the hosts clearly felt the pressure more than their opponents. Bremen never really convinced going forward, struggling to create clear chances throughout the 90, while Mainz looked a threat from start to finish. Nebel's brilliant goal set them on their way to a big win, with Lee getting the second and decisive goal shortly after the re-start.

Half-time: Werder Bremen 0-1 Mainz

In a half of few chances it's the visitors who head into the break with a goal advantage. Nebel's early diving header saw Mainz jump into an early lead, which Bremen struggled to respond too. For all of their possession, the hosts have struggled to break the 05ers down.

Tricky customers?

Mainz have just one win in their last six away games, and two total wins from 12 games on the road. That singular recent away win did come against RB Leipzig though, showing they're more than capable of hurting teams on their own turf.
camera-photo

More on those teams

Mainz are unchanged from their recent draw with Stuttgart, while Bremen make two changes from their win over Union Berlin. Stark and Lynen are replaced by Malatini and Bittencourt (pictured) in the starting XI.

How things stand

After St. Pauli lost to Gladbach and Cologne drew with Hamburg, a win for Bremen would put them four points clear of the play-off spot and seven clear of the direct relegation places, while Mainz are just one point behind them, and would therefore go three clear of Pauli in 16th and six clear of Wolfsburg.
camera-photo

Goalless first leg

Mainz's first taste of a European knockout tie ended in a goalless draw away to Czech outfit Sigma Olomouc on Thursday evening in the UEFA conference league. Whilst disappointing for the 05ers, it leaves them in a good position for the second leg at the MEWA Arena. That being said, striker Silas had to be withdrawn through injury, leaving the field on a stretcher, and is therefore unlikely to make his 100th Bundesliga appearance in Bremen as forecast.
camera-photo

Daniel Thioune on facing Mainz

"I don’t think too many people were expecting them to come back this strong, considering how few points they had at one stage of the season. They look really solid in the way they operate, and they set up very compactly. We know that’s how Urs Fischer likes his teams to play. The challenge for us is all about matching their level and then breaking them down by playing good football.”
camera-photo

Favourable fixture for Bremen

Bremen are unbeaten in their last six Bundesliga meetings with Mainz - their best ongoing run against any top-flight club. The Green-Whites have prevailed in four of them.
camera-photo

Jae-sung Lee-ap

Mainz's Korean playmaker Jae-sung Lee scored his 27th Bundesliga goal in the draw with Stuttgart. Despite standing at 5'9", 10 of those efforts have been headers.

Happy hunting ground

Mainz forward Silas, who is in line to make his 100th Bundesliga appearance, has three goals to show for his previous three trips to Bremen (all for former club VfB Stuttgart).
