Full-time: Union Berlin 1-4 Werder Bremen

Bremen extended their half-time advantage with another two goals in the second half to claim back-to-back Bundesliga victories for the first time all season. Grüll effectively secured victory midway through the second 45 before youngster Čović made sure of what is a vital three points in Werder's fight for survival this season.

Čović wraps things up!

That's the three points for Bremen. Werder enjoy a prolonged spell of possession. High up on the right flank, Stage cuts the ball back from the byline, picking out Bittencourt, who spots Čović at the far post. With his first touch since coming on, the youngster strokes it home for his side's fourth!

The centre-back's name is taken by the referee after impeding Grüll. That's his fifth yellow card of the campaign, meaning he will miss Union's trip to Freiburg next weekend.

Grüll makes it three!

Bittencourt whips a cross in from the right. Some calamitous defending sees the ball fall at the feet of Schmid. Well placed to finish it himself, he instead picks his head up and squares it to Grüll, who needs only to stroke the ball home into an empty net! Clinical from the visitors.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The xG values indicate that Bremen are very good value for their lead, considering that, on balance, they have been less likely to score than the hosts.

Half-time: Union 1-2 Bremen

At half-time in a topsy turvy encounter in the capital, it's Bremen who lead. The hosts assumed an early lead after Köhn dispatched the penalty that was awarded following Stark's foul on Ansah. A shock dismissal of Schäfer minutes later opened the door for the visitors, who before long found themselves in front thanks to Deman and Stage. Despite the man advantage, it's still all to play for in the second half here.

Mishit

Stage makes a good run into the box and isn't tracked by any of the Union defenders. He is found with a cross, which he makes contact with, but he scuffs his attempt. Had he scored, it probably wouldn't have counted, though, as he was seemingly in an offside position when he made his run.

45'

Almost a third!

Space opens up for Puertas to take a shot from the edge of the Union box. He aims a curled effort towards the corner, but it flies narrowly past the post, much to Rønnow's relief, who was well beaten there.
42'

Poor delivery

Köhn puts in a cross from a free-kick high up on the right touchline, however, he doesn't put enough on it and his cross doesn't beat the first man.
41'

In by Haberer

The wide player delivers a corner from the left, but it doesn't pose any danger to Backhaus between the Bremen sticks.
camera-photo

Promising position

Topp brings Querfeld down around 25 yards from his own goal on the left side. Köhn goes for goal himself, but his powerful, left-footed effort towards the near post flies harmlessly over the bar.
camera-photo

Stage heads Bremen in front!

What a turnaround for the visitors here! Puertas fires another corner in from the right. Stage rises highest between the six-yard box and the penalty spot, heading home into the bottom right corner. That's Werder's first goal directly from a corner all season!

Bremen are back level and it's no less than they deserve. Puertas swings a corner in from the left. Topp wins the initial header, finding Stage, who tees up Deman on the edge of the box. Union counter quickly. Ansah finds Khedira, who works it wide left to the goalscorer Köhn. Looking to double his money, he aims a shot towards the far corner, but it flies wide of the mark.

Leaning back

A cross from the left causes chaos in the Union box. Eventually, it falls to Stage, who, with his back to goal, tees up Sugawara. The full-back shoots with his left-foot from close range, but blazes it over the crossbar.

Stage shoots

Stage receives the ball from Sugawara and tries his luck from the centre of the box with his left foot. It's a decent effort, but Rønnow is equal to it and makes the save. Schmid was hovering to follow in the rebound, but he can't quite pounce on the loose ball and Union clear.
camera-photo

Schäfer given marching orders!

What an insane couple of minutes for Union! Minutes after assuming the lead, the hosts are now down to 10 men. Schäfer arrived really late into a challenge on Stage, with his studs up. It was right in front of the referee, too, who didn't hesitate to get the red card out of his pocket. Lifeline for Werder!

Penalty to Union!

Following a long ball up from a Frederik Rønnow goal-kick, Stark clearly holds on to Ansah, who goes down in the box. The referee makes no hesitation in pointing to the spot! It will of course be reviewed by the VAR, though.
camera-photo

Combative

Both sides are working hard to establish themselves in the early phases here, but are struggling to stamp their rhythm on proceedings thus far.
13'

Stage incensed

The midfielder is played down the right touchline with a great ball. With only Schmid to aim for in the middle, he goes down on the edge of the box under pressure from Nsoki. He vehemently protests for a free-kick, but the referee dismisses the claim.
12'

Half volley

From a throw-in, Ilić manages to flick the ball over his marker and into the path of Khedira, who hits it first time. His effort is on target, but it's straight at Backhaus, who isn't troubled by the attempt.
camera-photo

Acrobatic attempt

After a bit of a scramble inside the Bremen box, the ball pops up for Querfeld, who goes for the spectacular with an overhead kick. His attempt is well wide of the mark, though.
6'

Shot blocked

Bremen win the ball back high up the pitch. Schmid tees up Puertas, but the No.18's subsequent effort is blocked at source.
5'

Long throw

Nsoki hurls the ball into the box from a throw-in, but it's too close to Backhaus, who claims it comfortably.
2'

No danger

The corner from the left is fired towards the near post, but an Union head is first to it to clear.
2'

Early corner

Schmid tries to pick out Topp with a cross from the left. Nsoki is there, however, heading clear behind his own goal, conceding a corner as a result.

Daniel Thioune on facing Union

"They play a bit like Heidenheim, a very physical approach. They also have pace, so covering will be important, especially in transition. They often go for second balls and create dangerous moments from set pieces. Playing at home, they'll want to make things happen."

Khedira switches allegiances

The Tunisian FA confirmed on Wednesday that Union's Rani Khedira is now eligible to represent the country after FIFA agreed to his request to switch, having played for Germany at youth level. The 32-year-old brother of 2014 World Cup winner Sami could now make his senior international debut this month and potentially go to this summer's World Cup.
camera-photo

Perfect opponent?

With Union struggling for form, Werder could be the perfect side to welcome to the capital. While they do come into this fixture on the back of a win, Bremen have won just once from 12 games on the road this season.

Impressive Schmid

Romano Schmid has been a creative hub for Bremen this term. The Austrian provided the assist for Bremen's opener in the win over Heidenheim last time out, which was his sixth of the season to equal his personal best from the 2023/24 campaign.

Milošević the man

Since joining on loan from Stuttgart, the striker has scored three goals in seven games. Should he continue in this vein of form, he could help keep Bremen in the Bundesliga.

While still in mid-table, the hosts have won just one of their nine games this calendar year. That victory, which came versus Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 23, was also their only clean sheet in 2026.
