Full-time: Augsburg 1-1 Union Berlin

It ends all square in Augsburg, after a much improved second half from the hosts. They looked much better going forward and managed to keep Union relatively quiet, until the closing stages. Despite going a man down late on after Köhn's dismissal, the visitors managed to salvage a point courtesy of Ljubicic's late finish, leaving Augsburg devastated with only minutes to spare.

There it is! Union equalise!

Král's deflected cross lands at the feet of Ilić, who prods the ball goalward and finds Ljubicic a matter of yards out from goal. He finishes from close range to grab what looks to be a valuable late point.

Half-time: Augsburg 1-0 Union Berlin

In a half of little goalmouth action, it's the hosts who go into the break ahead. Union created a couple of good chances through Burke and Schäfer but couldn't capitalise, before falling victim to a late surge of pressure from the hosts. A moment of magic from Alexis Claude-Maurice put Augsburg ahead right before the break, putting the pressure on Union for the second half.

What a goal! Augsburg take the lead!

The hosts' late wave of pressure pays off. A Giannoulis cross is cleared and rolls out to Claude-Maurice, who sets himself before firing it toward goal from distance. The ball hits the crossbar before hitting the back of the net, and the hosts are in front!

Incredible support

Almost 2,000 Union fans have made the trip down to Augsburg despite it being on a weekday evening! There's approximately 570km between the two cities, with Berlin lying in the East of Germany and Augsburg in the South.

Perilous position

Augsburg are now just two points ahead of Mainz in 15th, after the 05ers beat relegation rivals Heidenheim on Tuesday. A win for the hosts would provide breathing space, even if only temporarily, between them and the drop zone. However, tonight they face an Union side unbeaten in three, and eight points ahead of them in ninth.

More on those teams

Michael Gregoritsch (pictured) gets a first start since re-joining the club, coming in for Fabian Rieder while Massengo, Pedersen and Kömür also drop to the bench in favour of Jakić, Rexhbecaj and Giannoulis. For Union, Ilić, Burcu, Haberer and Kemlein are replaced in the starting XI by Ansah, Jeong, Trimmel and Schäfer.

Steffen Baumgart on facing Augsburg

"It's an interesting game. Augsburg have their backs against the wall, have a relatively new coach but still lots of individual quality. The club definitely expected more at the start of the season and had different goals, but sometimes football is the factor. We want to reach the halfway mark with a win and will give our all."
camera-photo

Manuel Baum on facing Union Berlin

"When you play like we did in Gladbach, where we conceded four goals, you want to make amends as quickly as possible - preferably on home soil. We're looking forward to it. Looking back at the game, some of the fundamentals were missing. We've spoken about it with players individually and as a team. There could be personnel changes [against Union]."
camera-photo

Baumgart extends contract

Having joined in March of last year, Union's head coach has now extended his contract with the Irons. Speaking upon the announcement, director of football Horst Heldt said, "Steffen took over the team during a difficult phase and managed to give it stability and clarity. The development over the past few months shows that we are on the right track. Every day, we feel how united everyone is here on the pitch and beyond. That's why we are convinced that we will continue along this path together.”

Why a Thursday game?

A Bundesliga game hasn't been played on a Thursday since May 2021 when Hertha were catching up on postponed fixtures. But there will be more in the coming years as the current TV right period to 2028/29 means rounds of midweek fixtures (an 'Englische Woche') will be spread over three days instead of two.

Do Augsburg have the key?

The hosts have won three of their last five encounters with Union, their only defeat coming in their most recent meeting at the end of last season (2-1).

Union a tough task

Steffen Baumgart's ninth-placed side have lost just three of their last 10 games. They are unbeaten in their last three matches, two of which have been wins.
