Full-time Dortmund 3-0 Bremen

It took them a while to find their rhythm, but Dortmund were worthy winners in the end. The hosts carried more of a threat after the restart and deservedly increased their lead through Sabitzer and Guirassy, whose first goal in eight league games capped a very satisfying evening for Kovač and his players.

Bremen look beaten. Steffen's charges have done well for large parts of the game, but Dortmund's firepower in attack has been the difference.

After seven Bundesliga games without finding the net, Guirassy is back on the scoresheet! Pieper's attempted clearance deflects off Bellingham and into the path of Guirassy, who keeps his cool in front of Backhaus to increase Dortmund's lead.

2-0 Dortmund!

Sabitzer marks his 250th Bundesliga appearance with a goal! Svensson shows great composure to pick out Nmecha, who threads the ball into the Austria international just inside the box. His first touch isn't perfect but his second certainly is as he slams a powerful shot into the bottom corner. Game, set and match?

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The hosts have carried more of a threat in the second half and deserve their slender lead, but Bremen aren't out of this just yet.

Almost 2-0!

Silva does magnificently to pick out Beier, whose initial effort is parried by Backhaus. Beier is first to the rebound, which appears to be heading for the back of the net until Pieper throws himself in the way of the shot and manages to block it with his head. Silva is unable to steer the loose ball home.

Bremen win a free-kick in a promising position around 30 metres from goal. Grüll steps up but his effort lacks direction, sailing high over Kobel's crossbar.

Best of the rest

Dortmund have lost just once this season, and have the second best defence in the league having conceded just 15 goals. With Bayern racing away from the rest at the top of the table, attention has been diverted from BVB's brilliant first half of the season.
camera-photo

Goalscoring struggles

Bremen have hit the back of the net 18 times this season, one of the lowest totals in the league. They've failed to score in three of their last five games, with midfielder Jens Stage currently their top scorer with five goals.
camera-photo

Two top keepers

Although Gregor Kobel is leading the charts in terms on clean sheets with eight, compared to Mio Backhaus' three, the two aren't too far apart in terms of save percentages. Kobel has saved 72.7 per cent of shots faced so far, while Backhaus' total stands at 68.4. The young Bremen 'keeper has risen to the challenge of being the club's first-choice and impressed in his first season of Bundesliga football.
camera-photo

Home fortress

BVB are yet to lose at home this season, winning five and drawing two of their games there so far, whilst conceding just four goals. Bremen, on the other hand, have struggled on the road, winning just one of eight away games until now, with four of the remaining seven games ending in losses.
camera-photo

Back to his roots

Amos Pieper spent nine years playing for Dortmund's academy between 2010-2019, before leaving for Arminia Bielefeld where he made his Bundesliga bow in the 2020/21 campaign, having played a key role in their promotion from Bundesliga 2.
camera-photo

Niko Kovač on facing Bremen

"We played very well in Frankfurt in the end. I don't think it's a disadvantage to have played already [in 2026], but not having a game could play into [Bremen's] hands. They had a tricky start to the season, but they're a good Bundesliga team who like to have the ball. We have to make sure we have it more than they do."
camera-photo

Horst Steffen on facing Dortmund

"We want to defend well as a unit and try to prevent them from getting into the box. We have to work hard and be committed in the duels. Ideally, we want to score a few goals ourselves, like Frankfurt did [on Friday]. I'm expecting us to be bold and show a lot of attacking spirit."
camera-photo

First match of 2026 for Bremen

After heavy snow forced the postponement of their Matchday 16 tie at home to Hoffenheim, Bremen play their first match of the calendar year in Dortmund.
camera-photo

One in, one out

After it was confirmed on Saturday that Werder striker Victor Boniface will face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery, Bremen announced the arrival of Jovan Milošević on loan from Stuttgart on Sunday. A promising attacking talent, Milošević should offer the Green-and-Whites some much-needed support going forward.

Stubborn BVB remain unbeaten

Although Dortmund would have liked to begin 2026 with a win, they showed resilience to be able to rescue a late, late point away at Frankfurt. That makes it nine games unbeaten in the league, and leaves them four points ahead of third-placed Leipzig.
