Horst Steffen has never managed a game against Hoffenheim, well, their first team at least. He faced their reserve side six times as manager of Elversberg, winning five of those encounters and losing just once.

Horst Steffen has something of a defensive crisis on his hands. Maximilian Wöber, Niklas Stark, Felix Agu and Mitchell Weiser are all still unavailable, while Isaac Schmidt suffered a head injury at the weekend against Bayer Leverkusen and is therefore unavailable here. On top of that, Amos Pieper was forced off early on and is a doubt, with Marco Friedl suspended after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season. In good news for the Werderaner, Samuel Mbangula could be back in contention to feature after missing the last game due to personal reasons.
