Full-time: Pauli 0-1 Union

Steffen Baumgart's men hold onto their first-half lead to claim a hard-fought three points at the Millerntor-Stadion. Pauli emerged in the second half a much-improved side and nearly equalised when Pereira Lage's effort ricocheted off the post. But their inability to find an equaliser means Pauli suffered a club-record eighth consecutive Bundesliga defeat.

Another change

Blessin rolls the dice with another offensive alteration, introducing Kaars for Pereira Lage. Will the Dutchman be the one to find a late equaliser for the Kiezkicker here?
85'

Rønnow scrambling

Sinani takes the corner. It's a beautiful delivery, looping and curling towards the far corner, forcing the Union keeper to back-peddle to stop him from scoring direct from the corner. It actually goes over the goalkeeper, but Haberer is there to head it off the line.

Launched in by Metcalfe

The substitute delivers a long throw-in from the right. It's flicked on to Smith, but the No.8's effort is deflected behind for a corner.

One-way traffic

The last 20 minutes have belonged to St. Pauli, but they still trail here at the Millerntor-Stadion. Will there be late drama here in Hamburg?
75'

Pauli getting closer

Two huge chances fall for Pauli in quick succession. First, a mix-up between Trimmel and his goalkeeper gives Oppie a chance in an advanced position, but his effort is blocked. The hosts work it again to Pereira Lage, who breaks into the left side of the box and lashes a low effort back across goal. Rønnow is beaten, but the ball smashes off the far post and back out, much to Union's relief.
73'

More changes

Baumgart makes a triple substitution, introducing Haberer, Köhn, and Jeong for Kemlein, Rothe and Burke. Blessin also makes a change - his out of necessity. Pyrka comes off injured as is replaced by Metcalfe.

Leite intervenes

Sinani sets Pyrka free down the right. The wide-man then tries to find Ceesay at the near post, but Leite makes a great block to send the ball behind for a corner. Oppie takes, but Rønnow comes to claim it.

Improved second half

Pauli are winning the ball back on average five seconds quicker in the second half than they were in the first, which is contributing to their improved second-half performance. Nevertheless, an equaliser is remaining elusive.

Wahl!

Oppie delivers a corner from the right. Union head it clear from the near post, but the hosts rework it back to Oppie, who delivers a second, inviting cross towards the far post. Wahl gets his head to it, but the effort is straight at Rønnow. Pauli are getting closer...

Fujita shoots

Space opens up for Fujita on the edge of the Union penalty area and the midfielder elects to go it alone. His effort is well struck, but Rønnow manages to hold onto the attempt.
60'

Early cross

Rothe breaks free down the left flank. It's a two-on-two in the middle for Burke and Ilić. Rothe has the right idea in trying to find them with an early ball in, but it's too imprecise.

Khedira's opener

The veteran midfielder's first-half strike remains all that separates these sides 10 minutes into the second half.
55'

Pauli growing

The hosts are enjoying a spell of prolonged possession, whilst Union are struggling to get out of their own half. Oppie has delivered a few good crosses in the last couple of minutes, but they haven't found any takers. It's better from St. Pauli, though.
53'

Swung in by Oppie

The left wing-back delivers an inswinging corner from the right. He finds Wahl at the far post, who wins the header, but Rothe manages to get a block in to send it behind for another corner. On the second time of asking, Pauli don't manage to make anything of the set-piece, and Union clear.
50'

Trimmel delivers

Ansah draws a foul near the left touchline, midway inside Pauli's half. Trimmel whips in the free-kick, looking for Querfeld, but the hosts head it clear.

Half-time: St. Pauli 0-1 Union Berlin

The Berlin visitors head in at the break with their noses in front at the Millerntor-Stadion courtesy of Khedira's late strike. The first half has been a cagey affair and hasn't been helped by the windy conditions, but Union grew as the half went on, threatening the Pauli goal ever more. By contrast, the hosts are yet to test Rønnow in the Union goal. Alexander Blessin will no doubt be demanding more from his team at half-time if they're to overturn their run of seven consecutive defeats.

Khedira breaks the deadlock!

Union have the lead just before the break! Trimmel delivers another long throw-in. Pauli win the initial header, but their clearance falls to Khedira, who strikes it on the half-volley. His first effort is blocked by a teammate, but the veteran midfielder smashes the rebound into the bottom left corner. 1-0 to Union!

Floated to Rothe

Burke hangs a cross up to the back post where Rothe is arriving. However, Wahl does just enough to put off the Union wide man, and his header goes behind for a goal-kick.
40'

Breaks for Ilić

Following a free-kick, a Khedira pass is flicked on by Querfeld, finding its way to Ilić in behind Pauli's defence. The forward blasts an effort at the near post, but Vasilj makes a good stop, parrying it back in the box. Rothe tries to get on the rebound, but the hosts manage to clear.

First booking

Fujita is the first player on either side to go into the book this evening for a late challenge on Ansah.

Another long throw

Rothe fires in a long throw in from the left touchline. Pauli win the initial header, but the wide man follows the ball in and wins the second header. However, his effort goes wide of the left post.

Back in action

Pauli captain Irvine has not shied away from getting stuck into challenges this afternoon on his first start of the campaign.
31'

Quick counter

Pauli immediately go up the other end and fashion a chance of their own. A cross comes in from the left, finding Pereira Lage at the near post, but the Portuguese's header is wide of the mark.
30'

Trimmel takes

Union's captain plays an outswinger from the right finding the head of Querfeld in the middle. The defender manages to steer it on target, but he can't get the power behind the header and it's an easy stop for Vasilj.

Defences holding firm

Both sides' defences have held firm inside the opening 20 minutes here. The in-form Doekhi has picked up where he left off last time out and is marshalling Union's backline to great effect.
17'

Long throw causing problems

From the right flank, Trimmel launches a long ball in from a throw-in. It's nodded towards the Pauli goal by Mets, and Ilić tries to steal in front of Vasilj, but he can't quite get there and Pauli manage to survive the scare.
16'

Overhit

Smith tries to release Oppie with a long ball down the left, but he just puts too much on it and it trickles behind for an Union goal-kick.
13'

First corner

Pauli win the first corner of the game. Oppie plays an outswinger from the left, which Union repel from the near post before Ansah clears properly.
11'

Thought he was in

A chipped ball over the Union backline is played to Pereira Lage. It falls kindly for the Portuguese forward, but Querfeld does well to recover, connecting with a defensive header before being fouled by Pauli's No.28.
7'

Clipped in

Khedira is brought down by Wahl midway into the Pauli half. Trimmel takes the free-kick, chipping it towards the penalty spot, but Vasilj comes off his line to pluck it out of the sky.
4'

In by Trimmel

Union's captain curls in a deep ball towards the far post looking for Ansah. He overhits it, and it Vasilj lets it roll behind for a goal-kick.
3'

Windy conditions

It's been a cagey start with both teams looking to utilise long balls up from the back. It's a windy evening in Hamburg, however, and the ball is really swerving in mid-air when it goes high. Both sides' defenders will have to remain vigilant throughout for the aerial duels.

More on that Union team

Likewise, Steffen Baumgart also makes two changes to his Union side which claimed an impressive 2-2 draw against league-leaders Bayern on Matchday 10. Andrej Ilić and club captain Christopher Trimmel are back amongst the starters. Meanwhile, Janik Haberer drops to the bench whilst András Schäfer misses out with a knock.

More on that Pauli team

Alexander Blessin makes two changes to his Pauli side which suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Freiburg last time out on Matchday 10. Club captain Jackson Irvine makes his first start of the campaign, whilst Andréas Hountondji also comes back into the line-up. Martijn Kaars and Connor Metcalfe must make way, taking their places on the bench.

Travel sick

Union have only won three of a possible 12 points away from home so far this season, a 4-3 success in Frankfurt back on Matchday 4. Will they be able to remedy that today?

The stakes

Opportunity knocks for St. Pauli, who are in 16th place on just seven points ahead of this one. Fellow strugglers Wolfsburg, Hamburg and Heideheim all lost yesterday, while Mainz - one rung down in 17th - only picked up a draw on Friday. As such, a win here for Blessin's side would lift them up to 14th, and potentially even 13th depending on goal difference.

Steffen Baumgart on facing Pauli

"We’re going up against an opponent that’s really good in transition, is solid at the back and that has a lot of qualities. We’ll need to combat that and implement our own strengths. We’ll need to be very aggressive against the ball so that we don’t let them get into a rhythm."
camera-photo

Alexander Blessin on facing Union

"You only need to look at the stats to know it’ll be a match that’ll be decided by whoever wins the challenges. Union play with a lot of long balls and are really dangerous from set pieces, so we’ll have to be aware of that. But even if you’re armed with that knowledge, it’s difficult to make clean tackles every single time. It’ll certainly be a hard-fought encounter."
camera-photo

Threat from dead balls

St. Pauli have scored 56 percent of their Bundesliga goals this season from set-pieces, the highest percentage of any team in the division.

Union's danger man?

Danilho Doekhi's brace in Union's 2-2 draw against Bayern brings his Bundesliga goal tally this season to four, level with forward Ilyas Ansah. No defender has scored more than the Dutchman this season.
