GAME OVER

Bayern win their tenth game in a row in all competitions without ever really breaking a sweat. Goals from Gnabry and Choupo-Moting send Julian Nagelsmann's side into the World Cup break in fine fettle. The defending champions are sitting pretty on top of the Bundesliga, where they will stay until proceedings resume in the winter.

GRAVENBERCH HIT

Gnabry looks every bit as energetic as he did in the opening minute as the Germany international works his way in from the left. A pass to Gravenberch leads to the Dutch midfielder shooting low at goal. Schwolow saves that one handily enough. There will be three minutes of added time.

SO LONG MUSIALA, COMAN

Solid shifts from Coman and Musiala, who make their way to the bench for a well deserved rest. Wanner and Gravenberch are on for the reigning champions.

MUSIALA AGAIN

Is Musiala to have a goal that his performance here deserves? Not just now. Schwolow fists out the youngster's latest crack at the target.

Sane doesn't look best pleased to be coming off after less than an hour but Nagelsmann wants Matthijs de Ligt involved at this point.

UNSTOPPABLE CHOUPO-MOTING

Choupo-Moting is on ten goals in his last nine games in all competitions. Insane numbers.

SAFE HANDS NEUER

Drexler draws a save from Neuer that raises the noise inside the Veltins Arena. Terodde was probably offside in that move, however. Debatable as to whether that would have stood had the ball found the net.
52'

BAYERN AT THE DOUBLE

It's Choupo-Moting, of course it is. The man just can't stop scoring. Schalke have a free kick yet suddenly Bayern are on the break with Musiala. It's four vs. two and Musiala is not even in full flight as he assesses his options. The teen picks out Choupo-Moting who slams home Bayern's second.

HALF TIME

There ends a pretty decent first 45' minutes. Bayern have edged it and deservedly lead through one more Gnabry goal. Schalke will feel more than a little upbeat about their solid showing in that first half, however. Plenty to play for in the second half here.

Ooooh, not too far away from a Schalke equaliser there. Bülter's tempting pass in front of goal has Terodde stretching. The ball just evades the striker and Upamecano and bounces wide.

BAYERN LEAD

Bayern have done it. It's all quite simple in the end. Gnabry starts a combo move with Kimmich and then builds with Musiala. The latter accepts Gnabry's pass and returns a back-heeled assist that Bayern's No. 7 allows to run before darting a shot down the middle.

SCHWOLOW SAYS NO

From the resulting corner, Bayern go mightily close to taking the lead with Choupo-Moting's angled header. Schwolow pushes a fine, two-handed clearance onto the post and the Royal Blues survive.

GNABRY CHANCE

Coman cuts back towards Gnabry who powers a header at goal. Krauß gets a knee to the ball, deflecting it over before it gets near Schwolow. Gnabry should probably have done better there as he was completely unmarked.

SCHALKE BREAK

... and it's in exactly that manner that the hosts break through Bülter on the left. The No. 11 is away and breaks in towards goal before firing at the target. Neuer gets hands on the ball and clears, which is just as well for Bayern as Terodde was waiting to feed off any scraps.

SCRAPPY

Schalke will be loving this. The visitors just haven't really got going at all here and are being penned in through the middle by the Royal Blues, who are looking to pass their way out when the opportunity arises.

Drexler eventually shakes off a thumping tackle by Hernandez and the Schalke man is ok to continue.

SCHALKE FRUSTRATE

A couple of Bayern passes have gone astray in the past few minutes and what is clear up until this point is that the visitors are not at their slick-moving best in the opening quarter of an hour. Plenty of time to put that right, of course, but credit to Schalke who have been fully focused on their task.

UP AGAINST IT

So, what chance a Schalke victory this evening? The hosts are winless in their last 21 matches against Bayern and have only managed three draws during that run. But as we all know, in football, the shock factor always exists.

BAYERN'S WORLD CUP STARS

Every one of Bayern's starting eleven are headed to the World Cup (six with Germany, four for France and Choupo-Moting with Cameroon). Schalke have but one Qatar-bound player in their line-up: Maya Yoshida.

BAYERN TEAM NEWS

Ever present in all 23 of Bayern's competitive games this season up until today, the injured Sadio Mane is out for the first time for the visitors. Kingsley Coman steps into the Mane-shaped void for Nagelsmann's side. Elsewhere, Jamal Musiala is set to become the first player under 20 to play his 100th competitive game for the defending champions.

SCHALKE TEAM NEWS

Coach Thomas Reis opts for just one change to his starting XI compared to the side that started the 1-0, midweek win against Mainz with Dominick Drexler in for Florent Mollet, who drops to the bench.

WATCH: TOP 5 GOALS BETWEEN SCHALKE AND BAYERN

camera-photo

NAGELSMANN WARY

Nagelsmann has overseen a run of five straight Bundesliga victories, with Bayern scoring 22 goals during that period. While his side is directly opposed to Schalke in the table, he is not taking the Ruhr-based outfit lightly. “Schalke are now much more proactive out of possession and, from our perspective, they are coming into form at the wrong time. I'm really looking forward to playing in such a great stadium with a brilliant atmosphere. It will be a difficult match,” the Bayern boss said at his press conference yesterday.
camera-photo

REIS CONFIDENT

Against Mainz, Thomas Reis picked up his first win since replacing Frank Kramer as coach in November, and suggested his side may be able to follow it up with another good performance. “Getting a positive result against Bayern is certainly not easy. But it isn't impossible,” said the 49-year-old, although he did admit that the defending champions can “take an opponent out of the game in a few minutes”. The former Bochum boss will be hoping he can inspire a repeat of his previous club's 4-2 victory last season under his management against Bayern, although the earlier 7-0 hammering they suffered at the hands Julian Nagelsmann's men will no doubt be playing on his mind.

THE TREATMENT ROOM

Both teams come into the clash without a number of players. Bayern's absences are arguably more worrying: star forward Sadio Mane picked up an injury against Werder Bremen on Tuesday and was a doubt for Senegal's World Cup squad before eventually being included, while Alphonso Davies and Thomas Müller also miss out here. For Schalke, Sepp van den Berg and Rodrigo Zalazar are on the sidelines with long-term injuries, as are Leo Greiml and Thomas Ouwejan, meaning options are limited in defence up against the Bundesliga’s meanest attack.

WATCH: BAYERN PUT EIGHT PAST SCHALKE

To say recent history does not favour Schalke would be an understatement. Bayern have won the last 10 meetings between the two sides in all competitions, with the Royal Blues failing to score in any of the last five. The two match-ups during Schalke's relegation campaign in 2020/21 were particularly damaging – the Bavarians prevailed 8-0 in the opening game of the season before winning 4-0 in January as their opponents were in the middle of a 30-game run without a league victory. You have to go back to 2011 for the last time Schalke came out on top - 1-0 in the DFB Cup - although they did also win in the Bundesliga the same term.

WHAT'S AT STAKE?

Borussia Dortmund's recent collapse means Bayern Munich can open up an eight-point gap over BVB, although they will stay top of the Bundesliga over the winter break regardless of the result in Gelsenkirchen. Schalke's first campaign back in the top flight has been a difficult one so far as they prop up the table, but the 1-0 victory over Mainz in midweek should provide a confidence boost. With this the last league game at the Veltins-Arena until the end of January, expect the home crowd to be in full voice, although their team will need to come up with something special to get anything against the reigning champions.
