1. What is a Cookie?
1.1 Browser Cookies
Cookies are small text data files which are stored locally in the cache of the Internet browser of a visitor to the Website ('User'). Cookies make it possible for the Internet browser to be recognized. Cookies can involve the transfer of information between a User and DFL, a third party acting in the name of DFL or a third party in accordance with its provisions on data protection.
DFL uses several types of cookies which each have different functions. Additional information about cookies and how they function can be found at an information website, for example, allaboutcookies.org.
1.2 Flash cookies
The advertising partners/clients and service providers of DFL can also use Local Shared Objects (LSO), also referred to as flash cookies, in order to collect and store data. Flash cookies are different from browser cookies with regard to the number, the type and the method of storing data. They cannot be deleted using the administration tools for cookies which a User has in his Internet browser. Additional information about the possibility to deactivate flash cookies is contained in the last section of this information.
If a User deactivates flash cookies, the User no longer has full access to numerous functions which are supposed to support the User when visiting this Website. Furthermore, not all services of DFL function correctly.
2. Which types of cookies are there?
The cookies used on this Website can be classified in the following four categories. These descriptions are supposed to help a User determine how the User would like to interact with this Website and other online services.
It is generally possible to differentiate cookies between
- cookies which are deleted after leaving this Website (so-called session cookies) and
- cookies which are stored also after leaving this Website in order to again provide certain information when again visiting this Website (so-called permanent cookies).
Cookies can also be set by DFL (so-called first party cookies) or by third party providers (so-called third party cookies).
2.1 Absolutely necessary cookies
These cookies play an essential role and enable a User to move around on this Website and use certain functions. The User cannot use certain online services, such as the shopping cart or calling up invoices after confirming an order, without the absolutely essential cookies.
The consent of a User is not required for absolutely essential cookies because these cookies are necessary if the User wants to use the services of DFL.
2.2 Performance cookies
DFL (or the service providers acting on behalf of DFL) can store performance cookies on a User's end device. The information which DFL collects by means of the performance cookies is used exclusively by DFL or on its behalf.
These performance cookies collect anonymous information about how a User uses this Website and its functions. For example, DFL uses performance cookies to obtain information about which pages a User most frequently calls up, whether the User opens and reads our messages, in which advertisements the User clicks on other websites and whether the User receives an error notification. Based on these collected data, DFL can personalize the online experience of a User by displaying specific content. The performance cookies can also limit the frequency with which the same advertisement is displayed. Performance cookies do not collect any information whatsoever with which a User can be clearly identified.
2.3 Function cookies
DFL (or service providers acting in the name of DFL) can place function cookies on a User's end device. Information which DFL collects about a User by means of DFL's function cookies is not passed on to advertising partners/advertising clients of DFL or third parties.
Function cookies enable DFL to store information about the settings of a User (for example, the User's preferred language, country and other online parameters). The function cookies also enable DFL to directly offer to the User personalized functions and improvements selected by the User. DFL also uses function cookies to offer certain online services to a User or prevent certain online services from being offered to a User which the User has previously marked as not wanted.
In certain situations, DFL can permit an advertising partner/advertising client or other third party to offer content or online services from websites of third parties to a User. In this situation, it is possible that third parties place function cookies on a User's end device and use them in the same way as DFL in order to offer to a User personalized functions or improvements in connection with the content or offers of third parties.
When a User selects personalized options, parameters or function improvements, the User is permitting DFL (as well as the authorized third parties) to use function cookies in order to create a personalized experience for the User.
If a User deactivates function cookies, all preferences and parameters chosen by the User are not reflected in future visits.
2.4 Cookies for targeted advertising
2.4.1 Targeted advertising by DFL
The cookies used by DFL for targeted advertising are placed and administered by DFL (or by service providers acting in the name of DFL) on the User's end device.
The use of these cookies on this Website enables DFL to determine with regard to the displayed content and advertising as well as the online services of third parties, which content of DFL or advertising a User has viewed or clicked on. DFL can accordingly show a User those products which DFL believes will be of interest to that User. The DFL cookies for targeted advertising collect anonymous data.
The legal basis for processing is Art. 6 para. 1 f) European General Data Protection Regulation ('GDPR'), whereby the legitimate interest for DFL results from the fact that, DFL also wants to use its invest for operating this Website for direct advertising and corresponding measurements. The User - after weighing his reasonable expectations based on his relationship with the DFL as this Website operator - will not incur any particular disadvantages.
2.4.2 Further information on cookies for targeted advertising
A party placing the respective cookies (third party or DFL itself) is responsible for obtaining the User's consent.
