Holstein Kiel part ways with head coach Marcel Rapp and appoint Tim Walter
Holstein Kiel and head coach Marcel Rapp have parted ways by mutual agreement after a run of four defeats in five Bundesliga 2 matches, with Tim Walter appointed as his successor.
Rapp, 46, replaced Ole Werner in October 2021 and went on to enjoy a successful spell over the following four-and-a-half years, which included a historic promotion to Germany’s top flight in May 2024.
Their form has dipped more recently, however. Following a DFB Cup quarter-final exit against VfB Stuttgart, Kiel are hovering one point above the promotion/relegation play-off spot with just three wins in 17 league games.
“After a thorough analysis of the team’s performance and intensive discussions with my fellow board members and the supervisory board, we have come to the conclusion that a change is necessary,” said managing director of sport Olaf Rebbe.
Rapp added: “Holstein Kiel will always remain a special club for me, and I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and beyond.”
Kiel have moved quick to announce Rapp's successor, confirming the appointment of Walter, who had spells at VfB Stuttgart, Hamburg and Hull City after a previous period as Kiel coach in 2018/19.
Walter will take charge of the Storks again for the first time at home to Elversberg this Saturday on Matchday 24 (kick-off 1pm CET).
