Both halves started in similar fashion, with a goal for each side in quick succession. Adriano Grimaldi gave the hosts the lead from close range before Danilo Soares punished some sloppy Paderborn play at the back to make it 1-1. The roles were reversed after the break, as Nuremberg scored first thanks to a delightful chip from Stefanos Tzimas. Just four minutes and one VAR check later, Raphael Obermair got the home side level from the penalty spot. Goalscorer Grimaldi was later given his marching orders, as Miroslav Klose's side, now playing against 10 men, threw everything forward in search of a winner. In fact, the winning goal would come from a Paderborn corner, as Calvin Brackelmann headed home in the last seconds of the game to secure victory for the hosts.
