Signed, sealed, delivered!

Another brilliant counter from HSV. Schalke send everyone forward, including goalkeeper Müller, for a free-kick, but the hosts manage to clear and eventually Dompe runs clear to put the seal in a huge win for Hamburg.

We have a winner!

HSV have been pushing for it and finally they get their reward! Glatzel latches on to a ball in the box, takes a touch to evade Müller before squeezing a shot in from a tight angle. That's surely done it!

Schalke down to 10 men!

As if there hadn't already been enough twists and turns in this game, we now have another one. Cisse is shown a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge to bring down Meffert, so now the visitors will see out the rest of the game with 10 men.

Terodde unstoppable

That's now a goal to go with his two assists in this game for the Schalke forward. Terodde's strike takes him to 173 goals in Bundesliga 2 - extending his record in the division.

What is going on?!?

The very definition of a topsy turvy game! Schalke are now on level terms... again! Just minutes after HSV equalised then took the lead, Schalke are back in it. Terodde collects a long ball forward, fends of Ramos and then picks out a spot in the bottom corner. 3-3 now!

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
According to the xG expected goals metric, HSV should be winning this one by a considerable margin.

Brilliant first half

It's been a gripping first 45 minutes of the new season. Hamburg were the better side for most of it and deservedly took the lead through Glatzel's close.range finish, but Schalke hit back through debutant Ouedraogo before Ouwejan's stoppage-time strike put them in front.

The 2023/24 Bundesliga 2 season is officially underway as Schalke get the ball rolling at the Volksparkstadion!
Kick-off!

Warming up

The two teams are out on the pitch as they work up a sweat ahead of kick-off.

Team news – Schalke

Schalke, whose starting XI has a combined average age of exactly 28 years, begin with just three players who began their last Bundesliga game at the end of last season: Brunner, Kaminski and Drexler. They are joined by two summer arrivals in Müller and Schallenberg.

Team news – HSV

Hamburg have set their sights on promotion once again this season, but tey are without a number of key players for this opener. Captain Schonlau, Hadzikadunic and Mikelbrencis are all absent, while Muheim and David are only fit enough for the bench. Newcomers Ramos and Van der Brempt are thrown in at the deep end as a result, with Heyer asked to play in an unfamiliar role on the left side of defence.

What they're saying - Schalke

"We worked really hard, but we also know that not everything will go to plan in our first game, partly down to the changes to the squad," explained Schalke head coach Reis. "That's totally normal and it's the same for all sides, not just us. The important thing is that we keep on developing as a team and improve every week. Promotion is the aim, but we have to show we want the three points every time we play."

What they're saying - Hamburg

"We want to be even more compact, resolute and hungry in defence," said HSV head coach Tim Walter. "We also had the best attack in the league last season, which is something we're looking to repeat. We're happy to be getting under way again and want to be ready and put in a strong performance on Friday."

New faces - Schalke

Timo Baumgartl, Bryan Lasme, Marius Müller, Ron Schallenberg, Paul Seguin and Lino Tempelmann have been brought in to bolster Schalke's tilt at promotion. Florian Flick and Blendi Idrizi are also back on board following loan spells, but a massive chunk of the 2022/23 squad are no longer on board, including top scorer Marius Bülter, who's joined Hoffenheim.

New faces - Hamburg

Levin Öztunali - the grandson of Hamburg legend Uwe Seeler - and former Borussia Dortmund youngster Immaneul Pherai are among the new faces at HSV. They've also tied star striker Robert Glatzel, who hit 19 Bundesliga 2 goals last term, down to a new deal.

Watch: End of the road for Schalke

Despite showing a marked improvement under Thomas Reis, Schalke suffered an immediate relegation to Bundesliga 2 at the end of 2022/23. The Royal Blues finished 17th out of 18 Bundesliga clubs, two points adrift of the play-off spot and effectively four (given their inferior goal difference) short of outright safety.

Watch: Agony for Hamburg

Relegated to Bundesliga 2 in 2018, Hamburg fell desperately short of a long-awaited return to the promised land last season. HSV were beaten in the play-off for the second straight year, losing 6-1 on aggregate to Stuttgart.
