Full-time: Karlsruher 1-1 Dusseldorf

The two sides part ways with a draw after an intense 90 minutes. KSC had more possession for long stretches and fought for control of the match but rarely found solutions in the final third against the compact Fortuna. Dusseldorf appeared more dangerous, especially through counter-attacks, and took the lead via Itten. After the break, Karlsruher stepped up and equalised through a magnificent volley from Burnić. Afterwards, the match shifted back to a tactical contest, with clear chances remaining scarce. In the end, a fair draw.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
Dusseldorf are increasingly pushing for the next goal – this is now also reflected in the xGoals values.

Itten denied by Bernat!

Dusseldorf are now creating the better chances. After Karlsruhe lose possession, Itten receives it at the edge of the penalty area, turns sharply to the right, and shoots. However, the shot is too central, and Bernat saves.
78'

Itten creates the most danger

Itten is very active in the Dusseldorf attack again today. The striker repeatedly looks for the finish and has had the most shots on goal in the match so far.

What a cracker! After a free-kick from Wanitzek, the rebound falls to Burnić in the penalty area. From the left side, he takes the ball on the volley and smashes it into the top right corner. Kastenmeier gets a touch but can't prevent it from going in. Dusseldorf claim there is an offside infringement, but the referee awards the goal – equaliser for for the hosts!

Fortuna control the tempo

Dusseldorf are trying to calm the game down now and are waiting patiently for the next opening. Fortuna are repeatedly switching the ball well, while Karlsruher continue to struggle to properly get into the match.

Huge chance...

Dusseldorf get a great opportunity for a second goal. Tanaka wins the ball again in midfield, Itten then receives it well in front of the penalty area and plays a perfect through ball to El Azzouzi. He's free in the box but wants to shift the ball onto his stronger foot – he doesn't have time for that. Karlsruher makes a crucial intervention and prevents the shot.
47'

KSC put the pressure on

Karlsruher comes out of the break with a lot of intent. Wanitzek makes a strong move on the left and penetrates into the penalty area, but there's no one to pass to. Dusseldorf defenders track him well and clear the ball away.

Half-time: Karlsruher 0-1 Dusseldorf

KSC had more of the play in the first half and tried to maintain control, but struggled to find ways into the penalty area against Fortuna's compact defence. Dusseldorf remained patient, repeatedly looking for counter-attacking opportunities and creating more danger with their attempts on goal. Just before the break, Fortuna capitalised on a period of pressure and took the lead through Itten. Karlsruhe will need to be more offensive after the break.

Itten with the opener!

Dusseldorf capitalise on their first spell of pressure with clinical precision! After a cross, there's a scramble in the Karlsruher penalty area. Bernat tries to clear the ball with his hands but is obstructed by his own teammate. The ball lands on the left side of the six-yard box with Lenz, who cleverly squares it to the completely unmarked Itten. The striker simply sticks out his foot, the ball hits then the underside of the crossbar and goes in. Fortuna take the lead!

Low risk, low reward

It continues to be a very tactically orientated match. Both teams don't want to take any risks, which is why there have been no clear goal-scoring opportunities so far.
37'

Decent opening begging

Wanitzek has plenty of space on the left near the corner flag and delivers a cross into the penalty area. However, there's no Karlsruher player ready in the middle, so Lenz cleverly heads the ball back to Kastenmeier.
35'

Zimmermann with the first shot in the box

Dusseldorf get their first chance in the box. Burnic comes under pressure from Tanaka during the build-up, the ball slips through to Zimmermann. He shoots from the right side of the penalty area, but a Karlsruhe leg deflects the ball. It's no problem for Bernat, however.
33'

Brief interruption – play resumes

The match was temporarily interrupted after a strong challenge, but the ball is already rolling again.

Lots of possession, little danger

Karlsruhe have been controlling the game so far and are trying to maintain possession. Despite many passes amongst their own ranks, they haven't created many good opportunities yet.

Long ball almost pays off

Karlsruhe attempt a long ball towards Schleusener. The striker gets away well from Schmidt but can't reach the ball decisively. It's a goal kick for Dusseldorf.

Muslija tries from distance

After a Karlsruhe attack, he strongly intercepts the ball and shoots directly from just behind the halfway line after spotting the keeper out of his goal. However, the attempt flies over the crossbar.
13'

Good work on the break

Dusseldorf counter-attacks strongly: Tanaka wins the ball and sends Itten down the right. He has plenty of space for the cross, but there's no target man in the middle. Karlsruhe defend it without any problems and clear the ball out of the penalty area.
9'

KSC in control

Karlsruhe are now striving for more control and are moving the ball well in the middle of the park. However, the decisive pass into the final third is still missing. Dusseldorf have been defending attentively so far.

The hosts enter the penalty area for the first time. Wanitzek breaks through well on the left and delivers the cross, but Schmidt is positioned correctly and clears the ball far away from the danger zone.
6'

First shot for visitors

Fortuna get their first shot: After a strong diagonal ball from Lenz, El Azzouzi takes the ball directly from about 20 metres out in a central position, but misses by a wide margin. The shot flies past the left of the goal.

Schmidt receives a very early yellow card for pulling a shirt near the penalty area, thus stopping a quick Karlsruhe attack. It's his fifth booking - which means he's suspended for next week.

Markus Anfang on facing Karlsruhe

Zimmerman haunting boyhood club

Fortuna defender Matthias Zimmermann has an excellent record against his former side. The Karlsruhe native, who joined Düsseldorf in 2018 after making 50 Bundesliga 2 appearances for KSC between 2009 and 2011, has won nine and drawn four of his 13 second-tier outings against the Baden-Württemberg outfit.
camera-photo

Karlsruhe's drought

Their last win against Fortuna was almost 10 years ago, when Hiroki Yamada scored the only goal in a 1-0 away win in March 2016. Their last home victory against Düsseldorf dates back to the last millennium - a 3-1 win in September 1998, when Guido Buchwald was still playing for the Baden side and Klaus Allofs was Fortuna's coach.

Happy hunting ground

Fortuna are unbeaten in their last 12 games at the Wildparkstadion, winning five and drawing seven.

Impressive run

Düsseldorf are unbeaten in 13 matches against Karlsruhe, picking up eight wins and five draws.
