Full-time: Bochum 2-0 Schalke

Holtmann's show with two assists in the first half was followed by a period of Schalke pressure after the break, which only resulted in two disallowed goals. Bochum missed several clear chances to score a third, but can celebrate as deserved winners. Schalke could lose their position at the top of the table after Sunday's matches.

No taker

Becker breaks through superbly after a long ball to the right wing, but plays his cross into the space behind the strikers, missing all of the numerous potential recipients in the penalty area.
82'

Fresh Legs

Rösler brings on Rakneberg in a like-for-like change for Wittek, and centre-back Mašović for the attacking Onyeka. Looks like they're switching to a back five.
81'

Muslic running out of defenders

Because Kuruçay is missing, Schalke's coach now brings in Dietrich from Schalke's second team. He takes over Sánchez's position.
80'

Onyeka! That one doesn't count either!

Now the ball is in the Schalke net for the third time! But Onyeka's goal is also disallowed, as Sobottka handled the ball beforehand.
77'

Karaman's goal is disallowed!

The captain initiates the move himself with a through ball from the centre. The ball rebounds from Džeko back to Karaman on the right edge of the penalty area, and the captain finishes crisply into the bottom right corner. However, after a review, the goal is disallowed for a handball by Džeko.

Harmless

Both make substitutions

While Rösler wants to strengthen the midfield with Sobottka, the visitors bring on Younes for Gomis, a creative playmaker for the unlucky finisher today.

Passlack!

That should be the game done. Passlack has the freedom of the Schalke half to run towards Karius after winning the ball through his own pressing, but he hesitates so long that Katić manages to slide in and tackle the ball away from his foot. A potentially huge moment.
66'

Weathered

The hosts have come through Schalke's first wave of attacks after the change of ends unscathed. The match has calmed down.
64'

Another booking

Onyeka arrives late on Gomis and receives a yellow card.
63'

Second substitution

Rösler brings on full-back Passlack for goalscorer Miyoshi.
61'

Marshall!

After a fine pass from Hofmann from the centre circle, Marshall is able to run towards the Schalke goal, but squanders the chance and produces only a wayward shot to the right of the goal.
60'

Little relief

Bochum continue to sit deep, but they no longer have the outstanding Holtmann as a relief player. Alfa-Ruprecht is still acting very cautiously on the left.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
The first minutes of the second half have been the best, most dangerous phase for the visitors, who are looking for a way back into the match with fire in their bellies.

Goal - but foul!

Katić heads the next Schalke corner from the left into the net. However, referee Bacher whistles for a foul on Horn by the attacker. The Schalke players are furious.

Half-time: Bochum 2-0 Schalke

VfL lead 2-0 in the derby, and it is thoroughly deserved. Schalke are struggling immensely in attack and have no answer for high-speed Holtmann, who is putting on a cracking display in his first match since November.

Holtmann on fire

The man of the first half sees yellow for kicking the ball away. His five shots are already a personal season record in a match before half-time. Two assists on his comeback after knee surgery - brilliant! His next cross from the left is missed by Miyoshi in the centre.

And it is almost a copy of the opener. Long ball to Holtmann, who once again delivers a low and precise cross from the left. This time, Hofmann is there and smashes the ball into the left side of the net via the underside of the crossbar. Karius had no chance again.

The new back-up goalkeeper, Kevin Müller, is absent today, but Johannes Siebeking is included. The 19-year-old goalkeeper is part of the professional squad for the first time.

Ljubicić straight in, Džeko on bench

Miron Muslić also makes three personnel to his team from last weekend's 2-2 draw Kaiserslautern. New signing Dejan Ljubicić comes straight in, with Mika Wallentowitz and Felipe Sánchez also into the team. Finn Porath and Amin Younes drop to the bench, while Hasan Kuruçay is suspended. Edin Džeko is therefore among the substitutes again for his second game.

Three changes for Bochum

Uwe Rösler makes three changes from the 1-1 draw at Elversberg last Sunday, as Gerrit Holtmann, new loan signing Callum Marshall and Koji Miyoshi (pictured) start. Farid Alfa-Ruprecht and Kjell Wätjen are on the substitutes' bench, while Mats Pannewig is out due to illness.

Watch: The best of Edin Džeko in Germany

Take a look back at the veteran forward's finest moments in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2.

Proven against Schalke

The only time Uwe Rösler previously faced Schalke as a head coach, he claimed victory. Back in May 2020, he celebrated a 2-1 home win against Die Königsblauen in the Bundesliga with Fortuna Düsseldorf, with Kenan Karaman scoring the winning goal.

Strong record

Schalke are unbeaten in six matches against Bochum (W5, D1) and have won 12 of the last 15 competitive meetings with their Ruhr district neighbours. Bochum's last three points came in a 2-1 home victory in the Bundesliga in February 2009. That day, Mimoun Azaouagh and Christoph Dabrowski scored against Manuel Neuer, while Edin Džeko - now of Schalke - had netted a brace against Bochum a week prior. Džeko, together with Grafite, scored 26 goals that season, firing Wolfsburg to the title.

Watch: Schalke 2-1 Bochum - previous meeting

After 60 top-flight encounters, the current season marks the first time Bochum and Schalke are both playing together in Bundesliga 2. In the reverse fixture, Schalke came from behind to win 2-1, due in part to Loris Karius saving a penalty from Kevin Vogt.
