Full-time: Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1 Schalke

Then it's all over! Schalke throw everything forward in the final minutes but cannot prevent the defeat. Two ex-Schalke players ultimately take the sting out of the league leaders. The Royal Blues showed real character after conceding the second goal but it was too little, too late and ultimately Braunschweig can leave the field as deserved winners.

Becker prevents the knockout blow

The hosts counterattack in response and have a three-against-one situation. However, Raebiger slows down the pace somewhat, allowing Becker to slide in and intercept the square pass in the end.

Woodwork!

One ball after another flies into the Braunschweig penalty area. Younes' cross drops at the far post and lands on Wallentowitz's head. From close range, the youngster hits the post. That was a golden opportunity for the equaliser!

Sylla with the big chance!

Younes finds the head of Sanchez, who flicks it on for Sylla. The striker, while falling, directs the ball over the crossbar from just a few yards out! Schalke are now pushing for the equaliser.

Deficit halved!

Game over? Think again. Schalke strike back and are back in the game! El-Faouzi squares it across the penalty area to Sylla, who is denied by the excellent reactions of Hoffmann. The rebound falls to El-Faouzi, who turns and buries the ball into the net. Suddenly everything is possible again for the Royal Blues. Additionally, due to several injury stoppages, there should be quite a generous amount of stoppage time...

Sané doubles Braunschweig's advantage!

Eintracht have surely put the lid on it! And it's through another former Schalke player. Wallentowitz loses the ball in the opponent's half. Raebiger reacts quickly and sends Yardımcı with a long ball towards the Schalke goal. The striker picks out Sané who had made a supporting run into the penalty area. Sané then powers the ball unstoppably into the far corner. That should be it!

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
After a generally subdued first half, Eintracht have thoroughly earned their lead after the break. If it weren't for Karius in the Schalke goal, the scoreline could be even higher. Braunschweig's dominance is also reflected in the xG values.

Conteh cannot continue

The striker is at least able to leave the pitch on his own feet, albeit supported by the physios, but without a stretcher. Raebiger replaces him on the field. For Schalke, Wallentowitz also comes on for Ayhan.

Subdued celebration from the former Schalke man

Can Aydin held his hands up in apology after giving Braunschweig the lead against his former team.
72'

Conteh holds his knee

That didn't look good at all. The Braunschweig player seems to have suffered a serious injury in the challenge with Ayhan. The medical staff are on the pitch with a stretcher.
70'

Double substitution

Gómez cannot continue due to injury and so Di Michele Sanchez comes on for him. Sané also replaces Köhler.
69'

Down but not out

Twice this season Schalke have turned around a deficit - however, both times were at home with the support of more than 60,000 fans against Paderborn and Bochum.
67'

More in it

Younes curls a corner to the far post. There, Sylla gets the better of Gómez in the six-yard box, but can't get enough power on the ball, sending it over the bar. The Braunschweig player stays down afterwards and requires treatment.
62'

Schalke hanging in there

A few seconds after the opening goal, Conteh suddenly breaks through and charges from the halfway line alone towards Schalke's keeper. Karius stays on his feet and prevents the second goal. Afterwards, the Schalke defence clears it collectively. Difficult minutes for the league leaders.
61'

Fresh personnel

Schalke react to the deficit, with Younes and Timo Becker being brought on to hopefully spark the turnaround.
camera-photo

Braunschweig with the breakthrough!

Bell Bell breaks through on the left wing and delivers a low cross into the centre. Yardımcı's effort is blocked there, but Schalke can't clear it. The ball finds its way to Can Aydin, who strikes it powerfully with his instep from about 20 yards. Karius's view is obstructed, leaving him powerless this time to prevent the hosts from taking the lead.

Over the bar!

Immediately afterwards, a Braunschweig player is caught on the foot just outside the penalty area. It's a free-kick from an excellent position. Aydin takes the ball and blasts it over the bar with his instep.
59'

Karius prevents the deficit!

Heußer finds Bell Bell's run in the penalty area who stands completely free in front of Karius, but the Schalke keeper makes himself big and produces a great stop to prevent Schalke from falling behind!
57'

Braunschweig forced to make a change

The centre-back cannot continue. Ehlers comes on as a like-for-like replacement for Frenkert.
56'

Stoppage

There's a pause in play as Frenkert is sat down the pitch and requires treatment.
camera-photo

Miscommunication

Heußer plays a lovely through ball into the Schalke penalty area. Yardımcı gets to the ball and is in a good shooting position but Gómez also tries to reach the ball. Ultimately, both Braunschweig players run into each other and take each other out. The ball rolls out for a goal-kick.
52'

Overcooked

Gomis initiates an attack down the left side before playing it out to Porath, but the subsequent cross is so high that nobody can reach it.
47'

Karius called into action!

Bell Bell plays a deep ball into the path of Yardımcı. The attacker cuts inside past Katić on the left side of the penalty area and shoots low towards the far corner. Karius gets down quickly and makes the save. Then the flag goes up. The Braunschweig player was offside, so a goal wouldn't have counted anyway...
46'

We're back underway!

The second half is running. For Schalke, Felipe Sánchez has replaced Vitalie Becker at the break as the Royal Blues hope to break the deadlock in the second 45.

Half-time: Braunschweig 0-0 Schalke

A first half largely devoid of clear-cut chances comes to an end. Braunschweig had a great opportunity to take the lead through Bell Bell, but ultimately both teams are making too many errors going forward to find a breakthrough.

Winding down

Both teams seem to be content to go in at the break with the goalless draw. Neither side is really looking to find a way to goal.
40'

Over the bar

Marie sends Conteh on a run with a long ball. He leaves Aydin standing with a feint and then crosses into the middle. The Schalke players can only half clear it, allowing Gómez to retrieve the second ball. However, his subsequent shot goes half a yard over the goal.

Karius again

Once again, it's a deep ball in behind the Schalke defence, and once again the Schalke goalkeeper leaves his box to clear the ball into touch. Karius is doing really well up to sweep up at the back for the visitors.

Nice combination

The hosts combine quickly down the right flank. Porath is there to deal with Heußer's cross. Shortly after, the Braunschweig player looks for a shot himself. Karius gets down in time and holds onto the ball securely.
camera-photo

Lacking penetration

So far, apart from one headed opportunity, the visitors have not managed to get Sylla into a position to really threaten the hosts' goal. Credit to Braunschweig as this is due in large part to their organisation in defence.
21'

First yellow

Porath can only stop Bell Bell on the left wing by grabbing his shirt. It passes the textile test and the Schalke player is rightfully booked.
21'

Katić is alert

The home side take a quick throw-in and the Schalke defence is momentarily disorganised, but their defensive leader had stayed switched on and gets there in time to snuff out the danger.
19'

The final pass is missing

Karaman powers through the midfield and shakes off a challenge by Marie, however his subsequent attempt to find Sylla fails because of too imprecise a pass into the final third.
16'

Tightly contested opening phase

The visitors from Gelsenkirchen have the slight edge in possession, but Eintracht appear more purposeful towards goal overall and already had a big chance to take the lead through Bell Bell. Overall, both teams are giving nothing away in the opening minutes.
camera-photo

Stunning Eintracht tifo

There was some very impressive choreo from the Braunschweig fans ahead of kick-off.
11'

Huge chance to take the lead!

Gómez strongly asserts himself against Katić on the right side of Schalke's penalty area before laying it back from the byline to the edge of the box, where Bell Bell is positioned. The Braunschweig man pulls the trigger but his shot narrowly whistles past the left post.
9'

Another deep ball

Eintracht keep looking for the speedy Conteh with through balls into his path. So far, though, they haven't quite been on the money. Karius is there to collect once again.
7'

First chance for Sylla

Now it's Hoffmann's turn in the Braunschweig goal to get involved. After a cross from the left side, Schalke's striker finds himself in plenty of space in the middle, but his header ultimately doesn't have enough behind it to trouble the Braunschweig keeper.
6'

Karius is there

After a long ball from Marie is played into the path of Conteh, the Schalke keeper rushes out of his goal and clears at the left edge of the penalty area. Karius was very alert there.
4'

Too much on it

Neither a Braunschweig player nor a Schalke player can reach the long ball up from the back from the hosts. It trickles behind for a Schalke goal-kick.
3'

Good start

Eintracht are showing early offensive intent and win the first corner.

More on that Schalke side

On the right side, rising star Wallentowitz is rested, with Porath playing in his stead. Schalke must also do without Antwi-Adjei, and so it's Gomis who makes his first start since Matchday 7.

More on that Braunschweig side

Frenkert has served his suspension from the last home match and returns to the Braunschweig starting eleven. It's Ehlers who has to make way for him.

Kurucay's Eintracht past

Schalke's Hasan Kurucay played 43 matches in Bundesliga 2 for Braunschweig between 2022 and 2024 (four goals).

Feisty affair

In the last three Braunschweig home matches against Schalke across all competitions, there have been four red cards, with three for Eintracht. Last season, 10 Braunschweig players (red card for Jannis Nikolaou) battled to a goalless draw in this fixture.
