The stakes could hardly have been higher as Rot-Weiss Essen hosted Greuther Fürth in the first leg of the Bundesliga 2 promotion/relegation play-off. For Essen, it represented a long-awaited shot at returning to the second tier for the first time since 2006/07, secured after a dramatic final-day winner from Ben Hüning at Ulm.

Fürth, meanwhile, arrived having only narrowly avoided automatic relegation on the final day of the Bundesliga 2 season, with top scorer Noel Futkeu — the division's leading marksman with 19 goals — spearheading their survival bid.

Both coaches named unchanged sides from their respective final-day fixtures, with Essen boss Uwe Koschinat trusting the same starting eleven that had beaten Ulm, while Fürth manager Heiko Vogel also kept faith with the team that had defeated Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-0.

A tense, combative opening

In a half of few chances Jannik Dehm came closest to breaking the deadlock when he unleashed a dipping, swerving strike from around 35 yards that crashed against the crossbar, with Jakob Golz helpless.

Essen had their own moments going forward. In the 28th minute, Kaito Mizuta whipped in a delightful free-kick that narrowly missed the head of Hüning — any contact and it could have been a goal.

Then, just before the interval, Fürth's Futkeu almost produced a moment of magic with a spectacular overhead kick from a long throw-in, but the ball swerved just wide.

The half ended goalless, with both defences largely on top and the xGoals figures reflecting the lack of clear-cut chances — Essen 0.10, Fürth 0.10.

Müsel opens the scoring

Fürth came out with more purpose after the interval. In the 50th minute, Branimir Hrgota picked up the ball on the edge of the box and whipped a strike towards the far top corner, but Golz reacted well to make an important stop.

Dehm then came close with another spectacular effort, but his powerful strike dipped narrowly wide.

Silas Prüfrock in the Fürth goal was then forced to recover from his own blunder, having passed the ball straight to Müsel, who volleyed at goal only for Prüfrock to get back and claw the ball off the line.

However, just four minutes later, it was Müsel who opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick, finding the top right corner with a shot clocked at 121 km/h.

That goal proved decisive as Essen held on for a first-leg lead.
