Greuther Fürth and Magdeburg equal first-half goals record in Bundesliga 2 thriller
Magdeburg shaded a remarkable Bundesliga 2 game at rock-bottom Greuther Fürth that featured a record-equalling eight first-half goals on Matchday 21 of the 2025/26 season.
Brynjar Bjarnason set the tone by giving Fürth the lead inside eight minutes, only for a Reno Münz own goal to bring Magdeburg level soon after. The Clover Leaves appeared to be all out of luck as Magdeburg stormed into a 5-1 lead, with Mateusz Zukowski scoring a hat-trick and Rayan Ghrieb also on target, but Greuther refused to throw in the towel.
Late first-half efforts from Doni Arifi and Jan Elvedi gave Fürth a ray of hope going into the second period, with Sayfallah Ltaief on target for 5-4 within 120 seconds of the restart. However, the home side fell short of a completing the turnaround as Magdeburg held on for a win that keeps their heads just above the relegation zone after 21 matches.
Watch: Greuther Fürth 4-5 Magdeburg - highlights

It's only the fourth game in Bundesliga 2 history to witness eight first-half goals after Kaiserslautern-Meppen in June 1997 (HT: 6-2; FT: 7-6), TeBe Berlin-Fortuna Cologne in June 1979 (HT: 5-3, FT: 5-6) and Nuremberg-Homburg (HT: 5-3, FT: 6-5) in February 1975.
Incredibly, it's also the second 5-4 scoreline between Fürth and Magdeburg this season after Greuther won the reverse fixture on Matchday 4.
The aforementioned Kaiserslautern-Meppen game holds the record for most goals in a single Bundesliga 2 fixture (13). Arminia Bielefeld beat Arminia Hannover 11-0 on 23 May 1980 in what remains the German second division's biggest win.
