Full-time: Hertha 0-1 Kiel

Holstein Kiel secure a 1-0 away victory at Hertha. The Berliners dominated the match, recording a personal season-high of 23 shots on goal - but failed to find the net. Kiel, meanwhile, converted their only shot on target into the winning goal through Jonas Therkelsen in the 63rd minute. For the Storks, it's their third consecutive win and fifth match without defeat.

Season record and yet goalless

Hertha have registered 22 shots on goal for Hertha - their biggest tally this season- and yet the scoreboard shows nil.
89'

Hard to believe

Reese plays the ball to Brekalo in the penalty area, who goes to the left edge of the six-yard box and curls the ball high to the right. At the far post, Winkler is completely unmarked, but heads the ball wide of the right post from five yards out.
87'

Kiel making offensive substitutions

There are two like-for-like changes made as Müller and Niehoff are introduced late on here.
85'

Blocked

Reese tees up Brekalo - but a Kiel player blocks his shot.
84'

Another free-kick

Meffert brings down Cuisance just outside the penalty area. This is a good position for Hertha.
81'

Into the wall

Michaël Cuisance hammers a free-kick into the wall. This leads to a counter-attack from Kiel - and after a blocked shot from Jonas Therkelsen, the Storks are awarded a corner.
80'

Yellow card for Nekic

The Kiel man is penalised for a foul just outside the penalty area. It's his fifth, so he'll miss next week.
75'

Yellow card for Reese

The Berlin captain brings down his opponent in a challenge at the halfway line.
74'

Missed again

Berlin simply cannot find the target. This time, Cuisance delivers the cross from the left. At the far post, Gechter is completely unmarked for the header from six metres out - but he puts the ball narrowly wide of the right post.
71'

Still no reply

A Hertha Free-kick from the left is aimed towards the penalty spot. Dardai runs in and heads towards goal, but it's straight at Weiner, who is able to save. Had it gone in, it wouldn't have counted anyway as the flag was raised for offside.
69'

Way too high

Reese tries from distance, but he doesn't strike the ball properly and blasts it well over the crossbar.
66'

Out of nowhere

The opening goal was only Kiel's second shot on target this match. A few weeks ago, the Storks would likely have been trailing by now, but they're on a good run. A few offsides have gone in their favour and now they've taken their first real chance.

Unbelievable! Kiel lead

After Hertha just had the best chance of the match, it's the Storks who now lead. A long throw-in from the right by Rosenboom comes into the six-yard box. A Berlin defender can't clear far enough with his header. The ball falls to Jonas Therkelsen, who ruthlessly hammers the ball from 12 yards into the bottom right corner. There was a VAR check for a possible handball beforehand, but the goal stands.

Off the line!

Unbelievable! Cuisance gets past his opponent brilliantly in the penalty area, curls the ball past Weiner from 15 yards towards the goal - but Ivezić is standing on the line and manages to clear it with his head. The best chance of the match so far.

Whisker away

It couldn't get much closer. Karbownik drives from the left to the edge of the penalty area, where he plays a through ball into the box to Schuler - who slots the ball with his left foot from around the six-yard line, level with the left post, past Weiner. But the ball rolls just a whisker wide of the right post.
55'

More open game

The visitors from the north are now playing confidently in the capital. Where everything was going in only one direction before the break, Kiel are now making the match significantly more open and are increasingly playing forward.
49'

Storks offering more

The visitors win the ball back early ball before moving up the pitch quickly and firing a cross in, which takes a deflection behind for another corner.
46'

First corner

Kiel get their first corner of the match. Kaprálik's cross from the right deflects off a Hertha player. This means they're already more active after 40 seconds than they were in the entire first half. However, the corner comes to nothing.
46'

Back underway

The ball is rolling again for the second half here in the capital. There's one change for the visitors at half-time, as Therkelsen replaces Ugoh on the left flank.

Half-time: Hertha 0-0 Kiel

Hertha and Kiel go into the dressing room goalless. The hosts are completely dominant. Hertha have already had eight shots on goal, Kiel none at all. The Berliners haven't been accurate enough, but they have been unlucky twice. First, a goal from Brekalo was ruled out in the first minute, before a late penalty was also rescinded - both times due to the VAR spotting an offside infringement.

No penalty!

Nothing for Hertha again. Deyovaisio Zeefuik plays the ball to Reese, who shoots from close range, but Weiner is there to parry. Linus Gechter follows up, shoots, but Weiner parries again. Gechter follows up once more, gets the ball at the byline, where he is hacked down by Ivezić. The referee immediately points to the spot - but VAR flags an offside position by Zeefuik about 30 seconds before the whistle. Thus, no penalty is awarded.

Quickfire yellows

Meffert holds his opponent and is shown a yellow card. Tempers flare in the meantime, however, and Seguin pushes him over. The Hertha also sees yellow, meaning he will be suspended next week.
45'

Wide again

Michaël Cuisance plays a fine pass to the right side of the penalty area to Brekalo. He shoots from a tight angle but pulls the ball wide of the left post.
camera-photo

Held his ground

Josip Brekalo gets past Umut Tohumc, the Kiel player goes down.
38'

Huge chance!

Michaël Cuisance goes down the right flank and chips the ball into the middle. At the six-yard box, a Kiel player flicks it on to the far corner. Reese is there, taking on a low volley, but Timon Weiner closes his legs and manages to save it.
37'

Another cross

It's Reese again who whips in a dangerous ball. But Brekalo and Schuler can't quite reach it.
34'

Feisty Berliners

The hosts are proving tenacious in their duels. This is especially true for Michal Karbownik, who has won all seven of his challenges so far.
28'

Toothless Storks

Last week against Kaiserslautern, Kiel led 3-0 at half-time, but today the Storks are yet to register a single shot on goal.
27'

Shot blocked

Reese dribbles into the penalty area and shoots, but his effort is blocked. Seconds later, however, he whips the ball in from the left wing into the six-yard box. Schuler is there, but he can't make a convincing enough contact on the ball with his head, sending it wide of the right post.
24'

Easy take

Reese shows great skill on the left with his dribbling, then crosses from almost the byline. The cross, however, poses no problem for Timon Weiner.
18'

Rosenboom sees yellow

Now, it's a Kiel player's turn to have their name taken for a late challenge.
0:27
camera-professional-play-symbol

Good effort

Reese cuts in off the left and into the penalty area. The Berlin captain dances past a couple of defenders before letting fly with his left foot from just inside the box. The ball takes a slight deflection, which sends it sailing just over the crossbar for a Hertha corner.
12'

Close!

Seguin curls the ball from the left edge of the penalty area towards the far corner. The ball keeps drifting and becomes difficult for Timon Weiner to judge, but it narrowly misses the top corner.
10'

Another early yellow

Zeefuik arrives late into a challenge on Meffert at the halfway line, stepping on his foot - an action for which the full-back receives a caution.
8'

Kiel pressing

The visitors are pressing high up the pitch, looking to win the ball near the Berlin penalty area. To counter this, Hertha are frequently looking to launch a break with quick balls forward.
6'

Early booking

Cuisance sees yellow for a late sliding challenge on Umut Tohumcu.
camera-photo

Dream start ruled out

Not even a minute played, and Hertha were already celebrating, but it proved to be too early. Winkler breaks through on the right at the halfway line before playing a pass into Schuler's path. He advances a bit further and squares it to Brekalo, whose subsequent shot finds the net with the help of a deflection. However, following a VAR review, it transpires that Schuler was offside when the pass was made.

More on that Hertha side

There are two changes made to the Hertha team which drew 1-1 away at Braunschweig last week. Josip Brekalo (pictured) returns to the team after a two-match suspension, replacing Kennet Eichhorn who in turn is now also serving a red card suspension. Michaël Cuisance will take over Eichhorn's role in midfield with Brekalo operating in the No.10 role. Additionally, Deyovaisio Zeefuik replaces Toni Leistner at the back, with Linus Gechter moving into the heart of defence from right-back.

More on that Kiel side

The Storks have to do without their Berlin-born captain Steven Skrzybski, who is sidelined through injury. In his place comes Adrian Kaprálik (pictured), marking the only change made by head coach Tim Walter after his side's success in recent weeks.

Stefan Leitl on facing Kiel

"We have a great responsibility towards our fans and our sponsors to perform well. We are on 48 points and 60 are possible. I can't promise that we'll get them, but that has to be the goal."

Memorable cup victory

Kiel last beat Hertha 24 years ago, when they prevailed as a third-division side against their Bundesliga opponents in the DFB Cup. The Storks' last league win over the Old Lady was a 2-1 home victory in Bundesliga 2 in September 1980.
camera-photo

Rare visitors

Because Kiel have only visited Hertha once in the last 40 years (playing out a 2-2 in March 2024), the Old Lady's last home victory against the Storks in Bundesliga came all the way back in February 1981 (a 5-1 victory).

Unbeaten against former employers

Fabian Reese came through the ranks at Holstein Kiel, contributing to 42 goals in 109 Bundesliga 2 matches for the Storks, including 11 goals and ten assists in his final season with the club. Reese has never lost against his former employers, winning three times and drawing the other three.
